Wow, what a matchup. Forget the final-4, this is the "BIG GAME"!! LOL. The "experts" are already saying this is really good for UCLA, it will be like a home game for them! LOL Anyone taking bets on how many Boise St. fans will be in attendance in this game vs. UCLA fans? (Boise St travels exceptionally well). Other than the excitement of who has more fans in the stands and the Chipster's (OG) play calling (just how bad will it be), this one will be another low level, mediocre bowl game that most people will tune out.

Spot on but you left out the part where UCLA will lose this game!!

..it's be ironic and intensely interesting if Kellster pulled another snoozefest on this one. He'd be 0-2 in bowel [sic] games and we'll see how Jarmond feels about his precious "continuity" sentiments.

Tamara was right when she said that the purchase, care, maintenance, and replacement costs alone on the RB tarps would be a massive additional cost.

Expand full comment

Kellster, Chipster, Chip Alfraud, and Jarmond should substract all costs that their collective dumpster fire has incurred - tarps, ticket revenue hence tarps, lost players hence tarps, lost coaches hence tarps, lost fans hence tarps, lost program hence tarps. When you think about it all comes down to tarps 🤣

It may not be the most U.C.L.A. thing ever, but it'll rank pretty high when we play a bowl game that is actually closer to campus than our home games and we still see more opponent fans in the stands.

Oh goody, goody! This will be a certain test of Da Chipster's somnolence tendencies! I mean, like it won't arouse him and I predict he'll sleepwalk his way through this one!

That said, to show you what a dilettante I am, this is the first I heard of D'Anton Lynn getting hired away by the Toe Jams. My reaction? Of course he was! Nature abhors a vacuum and this was a veritable black hole of a magnitude yawning crevasse. And, no, no one will fill that up.

On one hand, you have to admire the Toe Jams for moving like lightening in absorbing one of their their enemy to plug the leak..

..and on the other hand., this is a direct wake up call -- not to the portly pretender who patrols the perimeter of the RB playing field -- but for good ol' [Spin and] Marty Jarmond! He better get off his ass and do something to plug his/UCLA's leak. I mean this is an all hands on deck! Man the pumps! She's going down by the stern!

But expect sonorous snoring out of the UCLA AD and another six years of the Old Woodchipper going .500 if he's lucky. But what do I care? The Bay Area Bombers are playing the Los Angeles Thunderbirds some time in December for the 93rd Roller Derby World Title this year!

I've actually been calling for Kelly's firing for months. But yes, I pointed out how it makes more sense to conduct our next head coaching search 12 months from now when we have the Big 10 money. Kelly deserves to have been fired, but we'd be hiring an unknown and potentially subjecting ourselves to 3-4 more years of mediocrity.

Expand full comment

Hi my friend bruinballer, yes I have been frustrated as warplanner said ever since the year before last when Kelly, in my view, was obviously not cutting it anymore. That time, I happened to be in NYC visiting friends and UCLA was in town for an exhibition game. We got the tickets in time for the game, which UCLA won impressively on national TV. By chance somebody said Jarmond and company were sighted in the house and we did see them. So after the game, many of us confided with him about our Kelly concerns. He and his fellow AD officials were attentive, seemed mostly in agreement with us. I then relayed the whole episode here. But since some individuals were surprisingly still harboring hope for our team and the coach, my comments predicting Kelly's dismissal soon were naturally not appreciated and the language subsequently expressed against my comments was unpleasant, mocking to say the least, To make it worse, the bombshell extension announcement last spring completely vindicated their sentiments, false hope while betraying the understanding we thought we got from Jarmond and company. Since then I was on the rope for everything I said only until now when virtually nobody wanted Kelly back. So I got the LAST LAUGH and is truly vindicated by facts, by consensus. I knew I was before my time. But now I can happily say I told you so. I am not saying it is payback time but I find it hard to understand why people had to say what they said back then when I was the first one calling for his head, ahead of everyone else. Not fully grasping the imminent gravity of the program, could they have at least sounded curious, inquisitive rather than mocking from perhaps only a fan to another fan and an alum ? I just noticed the guy now saying " I've been calling for Kelly's firing FOR MONTHS ! " LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Expand full comment

Oh believe me, Henry, I feel your frustration. However, my recall of this community's overall responses were not whole-heartedly in favor of Kelly. I'm sorry that some of those who were in favor were unpleasant in their responses; we should all feel free to post our opinions here, whether or not people agree with them. IIRC, Bruins Nation was predicated with the concept, hey, if you disagree, then back up your disagreement with facts, and not pejorative words. Iit seems to me that is pretty much what Evan has been trying to do. I've felt that Kelly needs to go for a few seasons now, and more and more through the last season, I read more of this sentiment from our community. Many here understandably were hopeful with the wonderful beginning of our season, but sadly, Kelly killed that hope.

Thanks so much, my dear friend. Many of you and I date back to BruinNation days. You may also recall my unique background of being Wisconsin native attending college at UCLA, then back to Wisconsin for grad school. It was rare to see out of state kids then, especially one from the midwest. Despite my split allegiance ( so to speak, LOL ) I and many of my friends in life always supported UCLA but Steve Alford, especially his last two gut wrenching miserable years haunted me to the point where I continued to be season ticket at Pauley but arranged to have our two seats attended by our neighbor and his teenage sons. He is a medical personnel at nearby Cedar Sinai Hospital. I never terminated our season ticket holdership like I did with football starting two seasons ago. Enough is enough. But this may surprise you too. UCLA still solicits heavily. Even my old undergrad friend, a Korean American and a Kia executive working overseas ( no mandatory retirement age in Korea apparently ), got the email too !!! We still talk and upon hearing it, I laughed hilariously and was totally beside myself. Someone at the AD's office took us loyal alums and season ticket holders worse than dummy ( LOL !!!! ) They apparently considered us lemmings. Follow the leader. If he says pay, we pay or jump, we jump. LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All in all, this next football season will be something to watch.

With a very good assistant coach and players already announcing they are leaving the team through the transfer portal can UCLA field a team on December 16th? This is a good matchup... for a program currently operating with Mountain West-level ambition, playing the perennial power of the Mountain West seems apropos, albeit noting that Boise actually fired their coach - who had a 22-14 record in his nearly 3 seasons, mind - midseason when performance wasn't up to standard... so maybe Mountain West-levels of ambition, but not quite operating at Bosie State-levels of ambition... how sad this is where we are.

Expand full comment

Someone remind me what Boise St did midseason when their coaching staff was failing them and where they ended up in their conference.

Quoting Wiki:

"The 2023 Boise State Broncos football team represent Boise State University as a member of the Mountain West Conference during the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Led by third-year head coach Andy Avalos, the Broncos play their home games on campus at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.

"On November 12, with Boise State sitting 5–5 (4–2 in Mountain West play), Avalos was fired with two games remaining in the regular season. Defensive Coordinator Spencer Danielson was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Avalos finished 22–14 (17-6 conference) in just shy of three full seasons."

The Broncos finished 8-5 with four season-ending wins against New Mexico, Utah State, Air Force, and UNLV (the MW championship). They *fired* their coach when he had a 5-5 record and a 4-2 record in the Mountain West conference.

To add to this, Boise St has just announced that Spencer Danielson will become the new head coach. This is how it works when you are attempting to improve the program and build a winner. Fire the old and make them accountable. Promote the new when they prove themselves. This is all foreign to Martin Jarmond, but even average AD's follow this model.

Expand full comment

Why take a shot in the dark and promote from within when we can hire an elite coast in 12 months when we are not broke af

Expand full comment

Yea, wait another year, right Evan. Just decimate the program even more, sort of fueling the already out of control fire to make sure there is absolutely nothing left. You have coaches leaving almost daily now. You have top athletes leaving. You see other teams making moves in recruiting and the transfer portal, Washington has already picked up a top receiver in the portal. But ZERO from UCLA & the Chipster (OG). Why? Because he even knows he and his accomplice Jarmond have driven the program to new lows, if that were even possible. So, you can be happy in the knowledge that the Chipster (OG) has accomplished what no other coach at UCLA has ever achieved, total destruction of a sports revenue program at a major University with the University's complicity. At this point any Athletic Director worth anything at all would fire this clown and put in a temp coach and if you have to take another year to find a permanent coach, so be it. This program isn't going to get any better or any worse under a temp coach at this point. Meaning put in anybody. But what about new recruits you say... what new recruits. But what if they go 0-12 next year... they are headed that way anyway. Oh, and for an "elite coach", who would want this job now? Perhaps only those who know they will have to build up this program from scratch and there are very few "elite coaches" who would even contemplate that. You have more faith in Martin Jarmond than I do, he feels the Chipster (OG) is a great coach already, that's his benchmark. So, are you going to entrust the selection of a new "elite" coach to this clown?

Meanwhile the UCLA fanbase, alumni, boosters have to endure another year of the Evan's and Matt Levine's defended the indefensible.

I have never, until now, abandoned a UCLA sport, not even the Alford regime in basketball, but now it has happened. I will not watch UCLA football until the Chipster is gone. I moved to Alabama a few years ago, adopted Auburn as my number 2 (you sort of have to pick sides here), next year and going forward it is Auburn only in football until we have a new coach. Somewhere on here it was stated the opposite of love is apathy, well I'm there. If the administration doesn't care why should I?

Agree with this, but word is SuC's offer to Lynn doubles or triples his salary (which may have been low at 1 Mil for a first time DC?) and new digs, hopefully for him not around Figueroa! Taking nothing away from Lynn's stewardship this year, he had some players. If he's successful, he'll be gone from SuC in a couple of years to a head coaching job or the pros. "As of Tuesday afternoon, there's still not been any sort of official word from Jarmond or the university as it pertains to Kelly's status.

"This does seem like a precarious time for the program. If Kelly does indeed come back, disgruntled donors might very well withhold their funds -- instead opting to move them toward basketball or another program.

Somewhat late to the dance on this but Plaschke's article on the "not firing" of Kelly is a searing indictment of Jarmond. It sure makes him come off like a mouth-breathing mirror-fogging moron. Also seems like there was an entire air battle over UCLA with banners both pro and con removing Kellster's hiney. Good news is that one of those costs around two large to get airborne. Excerpts below..

"Do you really want to praise the continuity of a program that, in Kelly’s six seasons, has had two winning records in the Pac-12, a 5-13 record against teams in the top 25, and only seven wins against teams that finished the season with winning records? The closer you look at Kelly’s 34-34 overall mark, the worse it gets.

"And do you really want to trumpet the stability of a program that ended this regular season sandwiching an inspirational win over USC with losses to Arizona State and California, two teams with a combined record of 9-15?

"After that USC victory, Jarmond responded to Kelly critics with a social media post that read, 'Read the room.'

"After the ensuing loss to Cal, a fan helped raise $2,060 to fly a banner over Westwood reading, 'Read the room — fire Chip Kelly.'

This toilet bowl matchup is pretty ironic, almost as if it was set up on purpose to contrast the difference between one program that didn't hesitate to make a change, while the other has languished and done nothing to improve (6 years and counting). Boise State head coach Avalos went 7-5 (5-3 in conference) with no bowl game due to COVID in 2021, 10-4 (8-0) and won their bowl game in 2022, and then fell to 5-5 (4-2) this season before being fired. Their DC Danielson took over, won their final 3 games, and is officially their new head coach going forward. Their coaching change may or may not work out, but at least they were proactive and decisive. Meanwhile, still waiting forever for Chip Alford and Martin Guerrero to be replaced...

It appears there is internet news coming out that Oregon St just hired away Ryan Gunderson, the Bruin Offensive Coordinator. So now that's the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator, within only a couple of days after Martin Jarmond expressed 100% confidence in the Chipster (OG). Now this guy is no loss at all since Dante Moore alluded to the fact, he had nobody coaching him. In addition, based on UCLA's offensive (and indeed it can be described as offensive) performance this season, I'd definitely say good riddance to this guy, but of course I don't think this guy called the plays, I think the Chipster (OG) had that honor. He will not coach in the bowl game, along with Lynn who will also not coach in the bowl game.

Blockhead is still there, and he should have simply said, "your gone", but Blockhead doesn't care about Athletics, he really never has. So, to him, it's just another "calculated move" by his AD.
