I need to ask you guys a favor. I got Rose Bowl tickets and wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel to stay in the area that's not too overpriced, but still quality.
Hey Ravenous first congrats to your Utes( my second favorite Pac-12 team. Your best bet is to stay out of Pasadena, maybe over in the San Fernando Valley near universal studios? Or Burbank near. Both still less than a 30 minute drive. Or if you want the commotion of the rose parade and bowl crowd, the 4 seasons Pasadena is nice!
Honestly, find a hotel along the Metro line and just ride in. I used Metro for the first time for the USC game because my new place is right next to a station, and it’s super convenient. Similarly, when LSU came out here, my friend PodKATT from ATVS used Metro for everything and found it worked great.
In OC, Amtrak (and Metrolink - which is the "local") stops at Anaheim ARTIC - which has lots of free parking and is almost never full (unlike Santa Ana and Fullerton stations which can have parking issues). From ARTIC to Union Station on Amtrak is ca. 33 minutes (Santa Ana station is a bit farther/Fullerton station a bit closer) while on Metrolink, its more like 50 mins (more intermediate stops)
whatever you do, make sure you get a hotel as close as possible to the stadium. Do make sure it is in Pasadena. Especially if you are from out of town, might as well get the full experience. Don't plan on booking in an adjacent city and relying on our decrepit public transit to get you to the Rose Bowl. It's bad on normal days, but holy hell if there is an event like the Rose Bowl or a holiday you are screwed big time. Hilton Pasadena and Courtyard Marriot both pretty nice and reasonably priced.
Just got my tickets and room for the game! First time ever going to a bowl game. Part of me kind of wished ucla fell to the jimmy kimmel bowl so we wouldn’t have had to travel so far but the holiday bowl is pretty prestigious!
You will have a great time! Remember going to the Freedom Bowl vs BYU and ended up sitting in the BYU section.....man they hated us by yhe end of that gm!
For the first year, I would imagine so. I would hope that Jarmond would not hurry the hiring process just for the sake of quickly getting us a coach. I'm good with an interim coach for a year, if necessary, to give him time to do his due diligence and give us the coach we deserve. The Kelly experiment was an utter failure imho and getting rid of him is the right move. It's not like Kelly would have won the southern conference title next year, anyway, so I am good with a year to get us a great coach. The wrong approach would be to get a coach in a hurry, which could actually be worse than keeping Kelly <shudder>
Honestly, Evan, I cannot. I trust in Martin Jarmond, however. Also, I just want a coach that doesn't make me think that sometimes I could make better play calls and decisions than him..... I'm tired of Kelly for this reason and for his perceived arrogance that must be based upon the past, since there is no reason for it in the present.
Well Bruins, it was a long time coming... but we're FINALLY GOING BOWLING!!! I'm very happy about it. Thank you, Chip Kelly. Thank you DTR and crew. An official bowl game takes by blood pressure down, at least 50%. I chose to be joyful for the time being! Go Bruins! I hope Oregon comes through for Chip. Come back, DTR (unbelievable that I'm saying that... but until someone proven comes, thats where I'm at.) GO BRUINS!!!
Not going to lie, was low key hoping we would be in Sun Bowl in El Paso cause I would have made the 9hr drive from Fort Worth....but, SD and the Holiday Bowl are quality destinations! Gi Bruins....beat the Wolfpack!
Umm, just so I know ahead of time, NC State has a winning record, right? Oh boy...
But still, it is a nice change to get a pretty good bowl game. What could have been with some defensive changes before the season and making this a 10 win season, but I'm looking forward to one more football game this season. Go Bruins!
As Mario Christobal leaves Oregon there are possibilities and rumors that the Ducks will attempt to get Chip Kelly back. Not sure how viable this is since Kelly didn't exactly exit Oregon on good terms, but we can all hope. Probably a better possibility that Oregon goes for Justin Wilcox although everything I've been reading the last couple of days has Kelly as the prime candidate. Please..Please..Please!!!
Oregon is an elite program. I have my doubts that they will go after Chip. No idea why Wilcox would be part of the conversation at a school like Oregon. Guy has achieved nothing at Cal, although i do see the rumors. Oregon should be going after elite talent.
Well one can hope. Oregon has way more money to spend on a head coach than UCLA does, and Kelly seems the type to gravitate to cash. I agree Kelly would fail at Oregon eventually, however the conditions are almost identical to when he inherited the Duck team originally and everyone saw what he did with those teams, so hopefully Oregon will be convinced? Maybe? Please.
Respectfully disagree. UCLA is paying him well PLUS he is still getting money from the Eagles and the 49ers. However, the Eagle money died out last year and the 49er money dies out this year, hence he needs more to make up the difference, enter the Oregon Ducks.
UCLA is not paying him well. He could be making much more elsewhere. He's also living in the highest tax state in the nation where over 50% of his income is gone, in a city with the highest cost of living. Trust me, coaching at UCLA was not a financial decision. He likes it here.
Oregon is certainly in the *$c category of being able to throw monopoly money at a coach. Even if they aren't competing at an elite level now (like $c) they have the assets (facilities, history, and mostly, dollars) to compete for pretty much any candidate with any other program.
Just my opinion, I don’t think Kelly is leaving this year. And if we get 8 or 9 wins next year, probably not then. We are gonna hafta give him a good raise in the extension to keep him though. I know that’s not what you guys think or want to hear.
Hopefully prices drop on the game tickets. I really don't want to spend $90 for the nosebleeds at Petco, as beautiful as the park is.
Though I am glad our bench is on the 3rd base line so we can look out at the outfield.
It'll definitely beat sitting through the coldest day in San Diego history within the rotting tomb that was Qualcomm to watch Roberto Griffin the 3rd just mollywop the Bruins on his way to the 2nd overall pick.
But catch us running riot on Gaslamp afterwards, and stocking up on Adobado (pretty sure that's the correct spelling) goodness because no one in LA does it right.
Congrats on the Holiday Bowl.
I need to ask you guys a favor. I got Rose Bowl tickets and wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel to stay in the area that's not too overpriced, but still quality.
It’s in Pasadena so all the hotels in Pasadena jack up the price. Try something in Glendale or Dowtown.
I would recommend the Courtyard Marriott or Doubletree in Monrovia a short distance from the Rose Bowl and both right by the 210.
Hey Ravenous first congrats to your Utes( my second favorite Pac-12 team. Your best bet is to stay out of Pasadena, maybe over in the San Fernando Valley near universal studios? Or Burbank near. Metro is great. If you drive you need to leave about 4 hours early.
Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
Looking at flight prices I probably will fly into OC and stay there and then catch a taxi to the Amtrak into Union Station and Metro to the game.
In OC, Amtrak (and Metrolink - which is the "local") stops at Anaheim ARTIC - which has lots of free parking and is almost never full (unlike Santa Ana and Fullerton stations which can have parking issues). Sounds like a good plan. Just allow plenty of time and buy your Amtrak tickets in advance.
Hey, don't miss the Rose Parade. It really is spectacular!
I'll make sure to arrive early for the parade.
Hey stranger! Good to see you. Congrats to your Utes and have a great time in Pasadena!
Can we have Whittingham yet?
As soon as we win our NC.
Well hurry up!! lol. But for real, we're all rooting for you guys here.
whatever you do, make sure you get a hotel as close as possible to the stadium. Do make sure it is in Pasadena. Especially if you are from out of town, might as well get the full experience. Ok I'll check prices on those
So minimum room cost for anything in Pasadena is $900 a night. $700 more per night than the place I settled for in OC
Orange County about 2 hours away with traffic depending on which part of the county
Sounds about right! The Rose Parade is spectacular too!
Just got my tickets and room for the game! First time ever going to a bowl game. Part of me kind of wished ucla fell to the jimmy kimmel bowl so we wouldn’t have had to travel so far but the holiday bowl is pretty prestigious!
I wouldn’t say prestigious( the Rose Bowl is prestigious), but I will probably make the commute to Petco park. I hope lots of Bruin supporters will.
You will have a great time! Remember going to the Freedom Bowl vs BYU and ended up sitting in the BYU section.....man they hated us by yhe end of that gm!
I hope my other home, the U, keeps Manny and we can dump Chip elsewhere.
Miami has fired manny and hired Mario. So this could be the last game of the Chip Kelly era at ucla….
As the carousel spins, interesting that Joe Brady - LSU OC in 2019 and Broyles Award winner - was just fired as OC by the Carolina Panthers...
a glass half full for me?
Miami did its part! Okay, Ducks, the ball is in your court... don't let us down!
and who do you expect us to hire. Whoever we go after will be a step down from Chip.
well they probably wouldn't be any worse, that's for sure and I am betting have a much better attitude towards fans and media! I say let chip GO !
what makes you so sure?

can you suggest any names we might target?
Chris Petersen would be a step up if he can be convinced to come out of retirement.

Joe, can you start a coaching carousel open thread? I think we’d all like to discuss this for the next few weeks!
I might write one tonight to post tomorrow.
