It is hard to understand about Chip Kelly, because he destroyed UCLA when he was at Oregon. Now that he is at UCLA, he is not destroying the other teams.

No, it's really not that hard to understand. Now that he is at UCLA, he is continuing to destroy UCLA...

The reason that Kelly did so well at Oregon was because he did not build the program. It was done by the coach that he took over from.

The program was going down and they, the Oregon program was put on probation.

Kelly had to show, I believe to come back to coach on the college level.

I have said this before “Kelly has not built a winning program.

Kelly just needs to go!

I also believe that UCLA needs to bring in a coach who built a program up without the resources that UCLA has.

He still had to coach those guys to win those games at Oregon. In Philly, he improved the team over soon to be Hall of Famer Andy Reid.

Yes Ed the Eagles did better in Kelly's first year and had a winning record in his second year. Kelly did not finish his third year and was let go after going 6 and 9. There has to be a resin why he was let go. If my memory is correct was that he lost the respect of his players and had a tremendous turn over of the players.

It seems that the same thing happen With UCLA. On top of that Kelly only lasted one year with the 49's and went 2 and 14. So his record in the pros was 28 and 35.

That might be correct about what you said about what happened in Philly. Although it seemed to me that prior to his 3rd year, he tried to make all of these wild trades to try to get Marcus Mariota, whom he never was able to get.

Two words: Luke Fickell

@Oregon. Nick Alioti. The Oregon defense under Chip was actually pretty good. They were just on the field for 40+ minutes/game because either A) the offense went 3 and out or B) scored lightning-quick. That offense mindset IS Chip Kelly. Whether you like his O or not, he is true to himself on the side of the Ball. The UCLA defense is so putrid, that even Ducks of Old would not win all that many games.

UCLA had Nick Alioti and should have been undefeated for the season except the defense gave up too much against Miami.

I would absolutely love Luke Fickell, but I've already written elsewhere that I have some hard core Bearcat friends who swear that he's an Ohio guy and is waiting for either the Ohio State (most likely) or Notre Dame jobs (less likely). They are certain he wouldn't come west and that has come up because of the *$c opening. It doesn't mean that Jarmond shouldn't be making him an offer he can't refuse, but I'm not getting my hopes up for Fickell.

I bailed out at halftime, something I almost never do having been a fan since 1985, I’ve always stuck it out and at the Rose Bowl I always stick around to hear the band, win or lose…I never could have imagined that the 1999 Rose Bowl would be the last one I see. I hope not. Anyway if I had to guess I’d guess it’ll be one more year of Kelly, clearly the big money is not interested in bailing out the program. I suppose we should beat CO and CAL and maybe $C but who knows. This one hurt me bad. My niece just graduated from Clemson, I told her how rare something like that is, to have it happen when you’re a student. She gets it. I’d like to see us at least make the playoff in my lifetime…

Love the players, they play their hearts out but were really let down by the coaches for this game.

Finishing in a bowl game is progress from the last three years, but hurts a lot more when you lose winnable games against freson state and oregon.

My oldest son went to Cal some years ago and I recall having similar feelings about Coach Tedford at that time. He had a few good years at the start and then things fell apart, with all kinds of discussions about a buy-out, etc. Dave Sandler UCLA '67. I remember Gary Beban, Tommy Prothro, Mike Garrett at USC and Terry Donohue's saving tackle against Michigan in the 1967 Rose Bowl. Later met Gary Beban at basic training at Fort Gordon, GA in 1969. While in the DC Guard, posted in a basement parking garage in Washington DC during one of the Vietnam marches, he and Jerry Smith, tight end for the Deadskins, played pass receiving with tear gas grenades.

It's crazy that we were never even competitive yesterday. It's not like we were totally outclassed from an athletic/talent standpoint, but it looked like we were going up against a Georgia or Alabama and we were out of the game from the opening drive. Utah is a perennially solid program, but they aren't playing for a playoff spot either. It just shows how big the difference is between the two coaching staffs.

Sadly this game went as I expected. Utah was ready and exposed the defense badly. I don’t think this was a surprise to people that have been watching UCLA regularly, but maybe news to some casual observers that were distracted by tall the pre snap smokescreen. I thought Utah would pass their way to victory, but when they started running all over us I knew it was going to get really ugly.

The offense was fine, not great, but fine. I like Garbers arm, with some more experience and better protection he could be quite good I think. But the O line was not good. Our RBs, especially Charbonnet, probably made us look a bit better than we are.

But really, yesterday was the same tune we’ve been playing for too long. I would have fired Chip after year 2, when paying the buyout might have made sense. Now, I’m not so sure what will happen. There should be no way Chip gets an extension, but can we find a way to get rid of him this year? I wonder if he’s told that he’s gone in Jan if he’d take a smaller payout, say 5M and go. [I guess Kelly would make 4.6m next year, so the incremental cost to the program is really the cost of the replacement- say 3-3.5M? C’mon donors]. Just let him know he’s not coaching next year and he’s not getting 9M. I think Azz’s contract is up in Jan or Feb and Chip should be told there’s no way he’s coming back. Seeing Kelly’s post game comments about the defense, I have a sense Chip knows that Azz has to go (if only to take the blame that the HC should own up to, and buy one last chance).

One other thing I’m a bit uncertain about - towards the end of the game the announcers were talking about who comes back, and were mentioning DTR. I thought this season was it, but with all the special rules around COVID and eligibility I’m not sure what the deal is. I guess DTR is not getting drafted, so why not return? Or were the announcers just mistaken? I keep thinking that the team is full of seniors, and will have to replace a lot of starters, but now I’m not sure.

Chip has some positives. I think, for the most part, he has an offensive gameplan each week and executes it. But thats about where the positives end.

He has a few questionable decisions each week on offense.

The defense is a dumpster fire. I think what frustrates fans the most is knowing nothing will change. At least this year.

"Kelly was directly asked how he could continue to justify defensive coordinator Jerry Azzinaro’s role with a unit that has been a sore spot for all of the head coach’s tenure. “I’m just going to talk about tonight,” was Kelly’s response. He said he thought the defense improved last year and played well in some of the games earlier in the season. He again relied on early-season rushing defense stats that are easily dismissed. “Tonight we did not play well in the rush category,” he said."

I read this as coach-speak for “Yes, he has to go, but I’m not firing him at a press conference”. I think Azz is allowed to quietly decide it’s time to retire. Or I could be totally wrong and Chip tries to retain him even after his terrible performance.

If Azz was in the corporate world based on his statistical performance he would have been let go several years ago, that's what's baffling to me. He's performance is bringing Chip's program down. So I can't fathom why he still has a job.
