So glad to be able to see some sort of a football season, to bad we had so many transfers because they thought great we wouldn’t. Also, what’s the deal with Jaelen Phillips he is tearing it up at Miami so far this year! Lastly what are the Bruins doing about uniforms this year, I imaging they won’t be UnderArmor ?
It is so bittersweet watching Phillips playing so well. He was all in as a Bruin coming out of HS, even publicly helping to recruit other players. The U.C.L.A. coaching staffs really wasted a great talent, but unfortunately that's not an isolated story.
i think they would have transferred anyway if they knew this was the outcome. 7 games, and not starting until November? Sounds appealing. And really #7 is basically in bowl season and won't mean anything if we are not bowl bound, which we will not be. That said, we didn't really lose all that many guys. But we will totally be the JV once the season gets rolling. Other conferences will have already played SIX games. There will be 6-0 teams while we are getting ready for week 1. There will already be national storylines developed before the pac 12 plays one game. 1 loss and definitely out of playoff picture, not like anyone from the conference had a chance anyway.
And by the way, the NCAA is messing up basketball too. A delay in the season does not have to be a big deal since the season starts early in the academic year anyway. The NCAA should be playing a full basketball season and kicking March Madness to April.
Minimizing non conference games is also stupid. Are we supposed to believe that it is safer for UCLA to play at Washington that it is to play UCI, Pepperdine, LMU, or SDSU? If they want to minimize travel, fine. Just have most of the non conference games be local or a shorter distance.
We do get some bit of a break opening with Colorado. I don't know if Karl Dorrell got even a week of spring football in with his new team before everything here shut down, and Boulder is under really really strict limitations on gatherings right now (not surprised in the least that there was a huge outbreak when students got to campus there) and that is limiting practice size. We are going to get the Buffs as raw as possible. Really bummed not to be able to be in the stands to see my Bruins this year, though.
The Big-12 is cannabalizing itself so far this year though, so presuming the given 2 spots for the SEC and Ohio St fills its annual reservation, there's a really good shot Oregon gets into the playoff if they run the table.
If the SEC gets two spots, the Pac-12 would need the Big Ten (Ohio State/Penn State) and ACC (Clemson/Notre Dame/Miami) to falter.
Plus with everything that has happened this year, and the schedule, it feels like the Pac-12's best playoff chance is...Southern Cal. I'd be ok with losing out on that playoff money in that scenario.

To address your questions:
I talked about Phillips a bit in the weekly CFB preview. To simplify, some guys just react better to a change of scenery.
As for uniforms, UCLA will be using UnderArmour this year. After that is where the questions begin.
agree on Phillips. It was so apparent as a freshman that he was an absolute beast and would play in the NFL one day.

Totally agree about travel, especially for the CA schools where all of them have been under similarly conservative health restrictions.

You're right. I always forget Clemson is ACC.
I'd also rather $c flame out than see them be our only shot at the playoff. Some things just aren't worth the price.
