This was going to be a different first half recap.
UCLA was actually leading this game until the final play before the half when redshirt freshman Chase Griffin threw an interception which Oregon’s Jordan Happle returned for a touchdown, giving the Ducks a 24-21 lead as the team went into the locker room.
Prior to that, it had been a back and forth kind of half.
After the teams exchanged a pair of short drives and punts, the Bruins started what would be a 9-play drive, but the drive ended when Griffin fumbled and it was recovered by Vernon McKinley III to UCLA’s 19. On the next play, Tyler Shough put the Ducks up by seven.
Qwantrezz Knight fumbled the ensuing kickoff and one more play resulted in Oregon being up 14-0.
The Bruins followed with a 52-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard run by Demetric Felton.
Knight made up for his fumble when he recovered a C.J. Verdell fumble for a touchdown to tie the game. The Bruin defense followed that with a goal line stand to hold the Ducks to three as Oregon took a 17-14 lead.
Griffin then led the Bruins on a 10-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 32-yard touchdown pass to tight end Greg Dulcich and UCLA took a 21-17 lead.
Then, on the final play of the half, Griffin through his first collegiate pick to give Oregon the lead at the half.
Overall, the defense was adequate and the offense was pretty good. If not for that last turnover, the Bruins would have gone into the locker room with a lead.
Hopefully, they can hold onto the ball in the second half.

I would probably say 21. One interception was on 4th down and they had to go 89 yards. But, the 3 others were very costly, particularly the one at the end of the half.
Chase is probably the better option, once he gets more experience. Which means he should be getting playing time to prep for next season, and Chipster will likely stick with DTR. With DTR only having a season left of eligibility, and so many freshman, it should be time for the new generation.
He reminds of Kyler Murray, but for a couple of dropped balls we may very well have won. I think we stick with DTR though. That halftime TD really did us in. I don’t get what’s with this team and turnovers. Hopefully we’ll get it out of our system.
That’s a very generous assessment. I like how he played, but other than being small, I don’t see it. I thought he ran the offense nicely and showed decent decision making for his 1st game. If we could put his brain inside DTR’s head, we’d have an outstanding QB.
First down!
I’m liking this drive.
Griffin has a good head on his shoulders.
Darn it. Stupid penalty.
3 and out!
The Bruins are battling. I like it!
Yeah they are.
Welp.
Damn. I like the aggressiveness. It was just a bad read by Knight.
Ouch
Well now it’s getting ugly. We’re still in it for now at least.
The defense has to stop them here. A TD will finish us off.
3rd down.
Lewis will miss this.
Joe the Prophet
Well, I did write the preview of the Oregon special teams.
Way off. We’re still in this.
SACK!
Just got home. Been listening to the radio broadcast for the last 30 min. Feels like we’re in this if we limit mistakes and penalties.
We’re still in it.
3rd an 1 and a shotgun run up the middle. Doesn’t make it. What a freaking surprise.
Idiots.
Brown does it.
Griffin’s pretty good for his first time playing. We need to score quickly though.
TOUCHDOWN, UCLA!
Touchdown!!
TD
Now, we kick it deep and let the defense go to work.
I can't believe I'm actually writing that.
No onside kick?
Three and out! OSA! OSA! OSA!
Onside kick or no? What do you think?
Deep. The defense has been outstanding today. OSA! OSA! OSA!
Time for an onside kick. We gotta hold em no matter what, might as well take the chance.
Huge day for Felton!
Less than four minutes to go and to get the ball back and win. Go for it!
Special teams listens to Joe.
Hope Osa does too. Come on, D!
The defense has held Oregon to just 83 yards on the ground. That's the key stat here.
Of course, they can't be giving up that passing yardage either.
1.....2....3....AND OUT!
They did it!
Still 2 TOs left
Used 1 there, so 1 left
They took one after third down. Just one left.
HERE WE GO! GO BRUINS!
77 seconds. Let's go Chase!
Our ball on the 19. 1:17 left
First down
First down
WOOHOO!!!! 15 yards and an automatic first down!
Oh yes PF!
RTP!
Eschew the field goal.
Liked for the use of eschew
Whistles...
A run on 3rd and long??
Oh well. Much closer than expected.
Yes, but turnovers mean this was a self-inflicted loss.
Same as Colorado.
We ought to be 3-0
Like the old site, this is a "No Moral Victories Zone." (Though, I suspect the old site might be one this afternoon.)
So when's the fire Chipster and potential new coaching candidates article start?
So how many points did they get off turnovers?
Tough liss. Too many mistakes to overcome.
sheet
We forfeited this game. 28 pts off turnovers
Again!
I would probably say 21. One interception was on 4th down and they had to go 89 yards. But, the 3 others were very costly, particularly the one at the end of the half.
True, still cost us the game.
Absolutely. I thought our D played pretty well. And we ran the ball well. Just a few costly mistakes. We were short 9 players as well.
I was skeptical about Chase Griffin but I think he out played DTR. Comments?
For his first college game he looked very good (though I didn’t see the whole game).
Chase is probably the better option, once he gets more experience. Which means he should be getting playing time to prep for next season, and Chipster will likely stick with DTR. With DTR only having a season left of eligibility, and so many freshman, it should be time for the new generation.
