UCLA Women's Basketball Takes on Texas for Sweet 16 Berth
The Bruins will look to advance to the Sweet 16 tonight for the fifth consecutive time.
After crushing the Wyoming Cowgirls on Monday night, the UCLA women’s basketball team faces the #6 seed Texas Longhorns tonight. It will be the first meeting between the Bruins and the Longhorns since the teams met in the 2018 Sweet 16. Tonight’s game is scheduled for 6 pm PT and will air on ESPN2.
The Longhorns are coached by Vic Schaefer who is in his first season coaching at Texas. Prior to joining the Longhorns, Schaefer was the head coach at Mississippi State where he led the Bulldogs to the National Championship game twice in four Women’s Final Fours.
Schaefer likes to use his defense to create offense. Texas has scored at least 20 points off turnovers 14 times this season and the Longhorns are 13-1 this season when scoring at least 20 points off turnovers. So, it would seem that the key for a Bruin victory tonight is to hold onto the ball and minimize turnovers.
On the court, the Longhorns are led by Charli Collier who is averaging 20.2 points per game and 11.8 rebounds per game, but she is far from the only offensive threat for Texas. Four of the Longhorns’ starters are averaging in double figures.
Junior guard Joanne Allen-Taylor is second on the team in scoring with 12.2 ppg while sophomore guard Celeste Taylor isn’t far behind with an average of 11.9 ppg. Taylor also averages 4.6 rebounds per game. Junior Audrey Warren is the fourth Longhorn averaging in double figures with 10.7 ppg to go along with her 5.3 rebounds per game.
The only starter not averaging in double figures in scoring is graduate transfer Kyra Lambert, but she was a preseason nominee for the Nancy Lieberman Award which honors the nation’s top collegiate point guard in women's Division I basketball.

Short Bench, Fatigue gritty performance
They had a very good season that ended on a bad night.
