Bruin Bites: UCLA Softball Earns WCWS Two Seed Overall
UCLA women's tennis advances to NCAA Quarterfinals while women's water polo falls to Southern Cal in title game.
Being deep into championship season, it’s time to revive Bruin Bites to provide some quick updates on what’s happened with some of the Bruin teams over the weekend.
Softball
The UCLA softball team finished the regular season on a high note Saturday, defeating Arizona 7-2. Rachel Garcia moved her record to 14-0 for the year. Then, on Sunday, the Bruins were chosen as the number two overall seed for the Women’s College World Series.
That means the Bruins will host the Los Angeles Regional this weekend. Their first game is Friday night at 7:30 pm against Long Beach State. That game will be broadcast on ESPN2. Minnesota and Fresno State are the other two teams competing in this weekend’s regionals. Assuming UCLA wins the LA Regional, they are also in line to host the Super Regionals the following weekend.
Women’s Tennis
The fourth-seeded UCLA women’s tennis team easily defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets yesterday, 4-0, to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on Wednesday. Fifth-seeded Pepperdine is up next for the Bruins on Wednesday at 2:30 pm PT and is scheduled to be broadcast on the Tennis Channel. UCLA is 2-1 against the Waves this season.
Women’s Water Polo
The UCLA women’s water polo took on Southern Cal yesterday for the national championship. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t even close and Southern Cal won the title, 18-9. The Bruins weren’t really ever in this contest. The Trojans scored the first two goals of the game. With about five minutes to go in the first, UCLA scored to make it 3-2, Southern Cal, but it only got worse from there. The Trojans scored five consecutive goals and UCLA didn’t score again until there was just 2:17 left in the half. Southern Cal led 10-5 at the half and they outscored the Bruins, 8-4, in the second half, resulting in an 18-9 final.

There are a lot of articles and interviews coming out since the announcement of the NCAA Softball Tournament selections having to do with the Pac-12 getting totally screwed by the committee. #6 UW was seeded 16. #10 Oregon is traveling to play at #11 Texas. Arizona and ASU both got shafted and down ranked. Meanwhile the overrated SEC got something like 5 of the top 7 seeds and will get many teams at home for Regionals and Super Regionals. It was a total joke. Even our usually tactful Coach Inouye-Perez was uncharacteristically (though still inadequately) frank in her criticism of the seedings. It was actually good to see the UW team get up and walk out during the live feed of the tournament reveal and even lame old Beth Mowins was briefly startled by this. And all this after the Pac-12 "surprised" everyone by being so successful in the Men's NCAA Basketball tourney.
This needs to be a very wake up call for the new Pac-12 commissioner and why I was somewhat dismayed to see they hired a marketing guy from Las Vegas instead of an aggressive competition guy from athletics. I hope he understands both the relevance and the dangerous precedent of this "tournament" selection by the NCAA supported committee and how this can be incredibly damaging as it translates to a bigger battlefield in football and basketball.
