Its unfortunately true. What would the expectation even be in year 5? If it’s a program headed in the right direction, you would build off of the previous year. But what is chip going to be able to do in year 5? Another 7-5 year? Maybe 8-4? Is that acceptable in year 5?
Might as well cut it now. Results speak for themselves. Everyone wants the team to be great and succeed and root for chip but you cant say you deserve to stay when youre currently the losingest coach at ucla. Like uclastepup said, jimmy got fired at wahsington because the ad recognized he wasnt the right fit.
Jarmond will have a decision to make. Hopefully financials doesnt tie him to chip for another year.
I’m hoping for Fickell, but either of those others would be solid. OTOH I said if Kelly goes 8-4 he should stay. I guess I have to go with that. Azz needs to go no matter what though.
It's simple: Before it's announced that Kelly will be back, Azzinaro MUST be fired, regardless of the final record. It forces Chip to agree to a new DC before deciding whether Chip returns. If he won't fire Azzinaro, then his resignation will be gladly accepted.
Azzinaro has ruined an otherwise promising season.
I completely agree. For comparison, look at Utah. With the personnel the Bruins have, had they received the quality of coaching that Utah provides, they would have won the PAC-12 South and be competing for the PAC-12 title. Chip keeps acting as if they can pull a mid-40's recruiting class and make them better by coaching. Fact is, they haven't.
The question regarding Fickell and/or Aranda is why would they leave? You laid out some rationale, but I question whether or not UCLA would be sn upgrade for either. I would love to see a UCLA win the PAC-12 again. A National Championship? I just don’t see that happening for any PAC-12 team anytime soon.
Fickell just needs to look at Cronin to see the potential. UCLA takes second to no school for recruit intangibles. Location, quarter system, social life, reputation, weather. If you build it they will come.
UCLA has a strong basketball tradition and is a top job. Football? Not so much. We love UCLA. I just don’t think that we are viewed as a great football job. The top talent is now headed to the SEC. Oregon is more pretender than contender, IMO. They are underdogs against Utah.
Still glad for the Bruins win, but I think the coaching question, for this year anyway, hinges on Azz. Looks like Kelly won't fire him, but maybe Chip will be able to negotiate a reassignment for him, and still keep the HC job. I'm afraid that financials and the number of open HC positions stack against the more hoped for outcomes.
I sometimes think Chip could be a successful Offensive Coordinator somewhere, because he has shown flashes of creativity in play design, but I'm not even sure about that because he can be amazingly stubborn even when things don't work. As for Head Coach, it's like on Seinfeld when Kramer got fired and his boss said " Kramer, I've been reviewing your work and quite frankly it stinks!" At least Kramer had the excuse of no prior experience. I honestly don't know how Chip has done this badly, but arrogance and stubbornness seem to be a large part of the equation. It's time to move on (again) and hope that the candidates mentioned by other posters here still find the Ucla in particular and California in general enough of an opportunity to leave their current positions

Washington Huskies fire Jimmy Lake after two years, with a record of 7-6. Imagine that.
UCLA should take notes.

Kelly just needs to go. I was at the game last night and people around us just couldn't believe the play calling and the defence was even worse.
yes the team played better but Colorado just is not a good team.
So again there also was no enthusiasm in the stands. My niece would rather read a book than watch the game.
To answer your question, Joe, yes, it is way too little, way too late.. don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out, Chip!!
This article would make more sense if chip leaving was a realistic possibility. Face it, he did enough this year to avoid the hot seat.
By beating only lousy teams? LMAO.
