#13 UCLA Gymnastics Takes on Top Conference Teams in Pac-12 Championships
UCLA will compete in Session Two along with Arizona State, UC Berkeley, and Utah.
The UCLA Bruins gymnastics team closed the season with a win against San Jose State last Saturday, 197.100-193.575. The seniors were honored after the meet and definitely made huge contributions to the victory.
UCLA started the meet on vault and posted six top scores. Pauline Tratz and Kendal Poston opened with a pair of 9.875s and Sekai Wright followed with a 9.675. Margzetta Frazier contributed a 9.8 and Nia Dennis posted a 9.9, taking the event title. Chae Campbell started her run at the all around victory with a 9.875 and, after one rotation, UCLA was already in the lead, 49.325 to 48.725.
On bars, Campbell led off strong for the Bruins with a 9.825 and Savannah Kooyman added a 9.625 in her final performance in Pauley Pavilion. Sara Ulias wrapped up an amazing freshman season on bars with a 9.825 while Frida Esparza added a 9.875. A fall required the first four scores to be counted, but Frazier came back with an event-winning 9.9 to get UCLA back on track. After San Jose State scored 48.350 on vault, the Bruins were even further out in front, 98.425-97.075.
Moving to beam, Poston continued to rock her lead off spot with a 9.800, and Samantha Satki earned a 9.900 and the beam title for the meet. Frazier added a 9.775, and Campbell scored a 9.875. Esparza scored a 9.825 to get UCLA’s beam to 49.100. The final score would be dropped, keeping UCLA comfortably in the lead, 147.600 to 145.700.
The last of the regular season Bruin Dance Party was the final event and, with a season high 49.500, the UCLA floor team did not disappoint. Emma Andres started things off right with a season high 9.850, and Wright kept the scores moving up with a 9.875. Frazier contributed a 9.775, and the final three gymnasts—Campbell, Tratz and Dennis—tied for the floor title with a trio of 9.925s. The final score of 197.100-193.575 would be a solid victory for UCLA to close out the regular season.
Pac-12 Championships
Today, UCLA will be competing in session two of the Pac-12 Championships along with Arizona State, UC Berkeley, and Utah. Berkeley finished the season #5 in the country, Utah was right behind at #6 and was the regular season Pac-12 Champion, and ASU was #11. This will be a tough session, as UCLA’s two regular season losses were to Utah and Berkeley, and UCLA finished the season third in the conference behind these two teams.
Utah had one loss this season to #2 Oklahoma, and had a full 11-meet schedule. Berkeley also had one loss to conference foe Utah no less, and by only .200 of a point. There is no doubt session two is going to be a nail biter, and a hard fought battle to the finish. Every stuck landing, every straight leg, and every hit tumbling pass is going to count today.
