UCLA Gymnastics Hosts Arizona Amid Team Turmoil
The Bruins will have fans in attendance for the first time in almost two years.
The UCLA gymnastics team hosts the Arizona Wildcats for the Bruins home opener this afternoon with fans in attendance for the first time in almost 700 days.
And the team does so amidst all sorts of turmoil.
Of course, there’s the internal turmoil going on with the team members who feel the UCLA athletic department hasn’t done enough to have their backs in the Alexis Jeffrey controversy. In fact, after AD Martin Jarmond met with several gymnasts on Tuesday and put out a statement on the situation, senior Margzetta Frazier still appears to be unsatisfied and publicly called for head coach Chris Waller to be fired.
As if that’s not enough, the results on the mats have not been very good either. So far this season, the usually dominant Bruins have struggled. They opened the season finishing third in a tri-meet against Minnesota and Iowa. Then last weekend, the team lost to Oregon State in another tri-meet. The Bruins did manage to beat UC Davis.
So, here we are at the end of January and the Bruins are not looking like the Bruins.
When you factor in the Jeffery controversy, it might be hard for Waller to get his team to perform well moving forward since it seems more and more like he has lost the team.
With the UCLA home opener today, it is a chance for the team to get on track in front
It’s a chance for the Bruins to focus on their routines and, hopefully, forget about all the other stuff. The only question is: Can they move past it and get back to excellence on the mats?
