I think we’re seeing a sea change in recruiting. The portal is fast becoming the recruiting method of the internet age, next year or the year after it’ll open up to high schoolers. Just like everything else, COVID advanced recruiting via internet by about ten years. People are buying houses through FaceTime, never even going there in person, and with multiple offers that way. Everybody wants to work from home now that they’ve tasted freedom from the office. I bought my car online, no test drive or “kicking the tires” and so are a lot of people. It’s the only way to buy a Tesla or a Rivian. What that means to Coach Kelly and UCLA I dunno. That said the schedule pisses me off. No way should we ever play a D2 team or whatever they’re calling them these days. Dammit.
Business wise I think the portal makes perfect sense as you have access to players who have matured physically and have a resume playing at the college level. There's less risk than a high school recruit. Lane Kiffin calls the portal college free agency. Case in point is Dillion Gabriel as he was a 3 star recruit and now just about everybody wanted him.
I wonder if it’ll develop into a two tier farm club system where high school goes to lower tier teams and elite is mostly portal. It seems we’re headed that way…
elite players typically do not transfer. It is the players in search of playing time or who were under recruited in high school and want to finish off their career somewhere else.
would actually rather get studs out of the transfer portal than out of high school. Much more sound strategy. This new kid from Duke should be able to start immediately. Very few freshmen can do that. You know what you are getting with an established transfer. Super stoked on this QB from UCF.
is 11 supposed to be a lot? seems kinda average. I think Oregon has 12? Face it, if you have a solid roster there's gonna be a lot of guys down on the depth chart who don't want to wait 3 years to get playing time.
Deion Sanders just flipped a top 5 recruit from Florida State to Jackson State (FCS School). If Azz gets let go what do you all think of hiring Deion as DC?
I don't know what kind of experience Deion has as a DC, but he is already an impressive head coach and program leader. His football IQ and resume and charisma and leadership make a really impressive combo, and it seems like that would be underutilized as a coordinator.
To Deion's credit, he seems committed to dedicating his efforts at Jackson State, an HBCU, and I admire that. I'd really be disappointed to see him take a lesser coordinator job at a bigger name school. Personally, I'd love him as our head coach. I'd also love if he continues to elevate Jackson State to the national level - and winning over the #1 recruit in the country is another step in that direction.
Ah coaches are always looking for QBs. It’s their main focus. You never know, recall Martinez was the second coming of god at $C and where is he now? I dunno.
but the quarterbacks we were looking at are not depth pieces. Gabriel will start right away assuming DTR leaves, and I think the fact that he is coming means he was told DTR is gone. It's his job until he graduates. He is not Garbers coming in to be a backup.
UCLA football coach Chip Kelly on Pac-12 Radio: "We're not going to sign any high school kids in the next two days but we'll be active in the transfer portal to fill out those remaining seven or eight scholarships."
It is interesting how two highly rated QBs are transferring out and two highly rated QBs are coming in.
who are the 2 highly rated QBs transferring out?
Quarterbacks Parker McQuarrie and Kajiya Hollawayne
again, who are the HIGHLY RATED Qbs's transferring out. Those 2 guys are depth pieces. Nobody ever expected them to start at UCLA.

Eleven in the portal with most out of state. It can't be Chip and the program, so must be the weather!

He should be the head coach

Deion is an alpha dog. Head coach only.
Yeah, he wants that cool blue Aflac jacket that Saban has!
He would look cool in Powderkeg Blue.
Recruiting wise Deon would drop the mic in LA. And SC would be relegated to the proverbial red headed step child!
head coach to DC is a pretty big downgrade. He is 1-2 years from having a Power 5 head coaching job.
I like the class so far. I think we’ll get a fair amount of transfers too. I also think Garbers is a multi year starter. We’ll see right?
doubt Chip would be so aggressive in the transfer market for QBs if he viewed Garbers as a future starter

So both a Jadyn Martin and a Justyn Martin? Cool cool cool!
Nope. Jadyn Marshall and Justyn Martin.
Oh good. I was already confused…
Would like to see more DLs and LBs, but overall the class is coming along well.
Basketball game canceled due to COVID

good
Regarding the recent defensive coaching moves and rumors, what do you guys make of it, could it fortell the regime change we're hoping for?
Portal is blowing up again!
