Water polo story, when I started at UCLA I did an orientation where you stayed two nights in the dorm, somehow our dorm room was right by the water polo practice. Being from Denver I had never even heard of water polo! I remember the coach was really shall we say intense…
Have you been to Colorado Springs? It is the home of the USA Olympics training facility and one of several training sites for the USA aquatics teams for the past 30+ years.
Is it worse to lose like that and possibly have a good team, than get blown out and know your team sucks? Let’s see how we do against our first real test with Washington. It’ll give a better gauge for our chances against Oregon.
I doubt if Colorado fires Dorrell during the season. According to a tweet from a sportswriter (see below), Dorrell's buyout is $11.4 million currently, but drops to $4 mil at the conclusion of the season (January 1). Firing Dorrell is probably not going to change the possibility that Colorado loses every game this season, so the university should bite the bullet and wait until the off-season to make a change.
Colorado might well be the worst D-1 program in the country right now - yes, even worse than Jim Mora Jr.’s UConn Huskies - so perhaps the Bruins erratic performances (including today) are simply a case of playing down to an inferior opponent. Unfortunately, after four games a team should be coalescing into who and what they really are, and this UCLA team appears to have some significant weaknesses that should be easily exploited by better opponents. On offense, the O line play is inconsistent, no deep threats have emerged and DTR still provides some signature WTF moments. But the real issue will be on defense - poor tackling, silly penalties, nobody to anchor the interior line, and some of the most inept secondary play imaginable….aside from the huge cushions, they appear to have no idea whatsoever of coverage techniques or how to play the ball. Today, in addition to some big Colorado plays down the fields, there were other instances where the Buff QB simply missed wide open receivers or receivers dropped catchable balls - not a repeatable strategy against most of the remaining opponents. Hope I’m wrong, but feels like there’s some ugly games in the near future…even teams like Arizona and Cal will likely have their way with this team, much less the powerful offenses of Oregon, Utah and SC.
Chip's not going anywhere after signing an extension and while he's winning games. Let's see how the team looks over the next 3 games, facing 3 ranked opponents. If the Bruins can win these games and hopefully decisively, then perhaps the Bruins will no longer be viewed as a second rate team.
I mostly completely agree. Cal could end up being a problem, since they have time to get better. Arizona’s defense is bad enough that we better win, even if it’s a shootout.
Of course if your best players are the qb and rb that’s a lot better than say the punter and and someone on the defense right? Overall D and O line are a real problem right now. We’ll see next week for sure.
Yes, my cousin lived there for many years. We’ve driven Pikes Peak and visited Garden of the Gods. Stayed at the Broadmoor and went to AF football games. We’ve been to the Olympics Aquatic Center. Also watched I can’t remember their names Ice Skating Medalists training in the early 90s. Tai Babylonia maybe? We haven’t been back for years though.
Ah, the unicorn defense. I well remember the Alfordistas who similarly used to say, "What if he wins a National Championship? Then what will you say?" That is a ridiculous stand.
I actually did this as more of a thought exercise, not to rub it in people’s faces if it happens. I don’t think he’ll pull it off so I’ll be as shocked as anyone else here
I think it's a fair question as you posed it, because for me, there's more than just the W/L record that will decide Chip's fate. The embarrassing attendance is in many ways an even bigger problem, because even if Chip does get this team to 9 or 10 wins (which I think is our ceiling this year), if we are still getting ~30K in the Rose Bowl each week, that's an enormous failure. It's a terrible look for the program and will put an even bigger hit on our already poor recruiting and I would guess is also being reflected in donations. Maybe winning brings in more fans, but we finished strong last year and had a returning star QB and RB and that hasn't remotely translated to more fans or interest so far this season. Karl Dorrell had a 10 win season for us (thank you MJD and Marcedes and Drew) but that was a temporary bandaid on longer term and bigger issue problems. Chip winning a bunch of games this year has the same feel for me.
That’s kind of what I was going for. I would like to see how the fan base responds. If there’s still not a lot of turnout and we’re 7-0 or even 6-1 that’s a pretty damning response

Whatever else you can say, at least we’re not WSU fans…
Leading into the last few minutes and gave up what 3 scores in like 3 minutes? Yikes!
Wazzu coug'd it.

I think it’s worse. A loss like that can wreck the whole season. It’s early still so we’ll see.
The Buffs have allowed 173 points against 47 points scored. Did I miss somethingi? Did Karl Dorrell hire Jerry Azzinaro as his DC?
They have the worst defense in the power 5.
That’s why this game was irrelevant, outside of possibly being a number to getting us a bowl game.
Does anyone think Dorrell will last the season, before getting canned?

*cough* He was already ousted! 😅

I just watched the highlights, not looking good on either side. DTR and Charbonnet, after that…

Halftime, OSU leads $UC 7-3.
Disappointing end to the OSU game. Winnable game for them IMO.
OSU got cheated on a “pick” that had blatant defensive pass interference, with the ref there staring right at it.
We should know soon whether or not we have a decent team. The defense has a few question marks.

If we somehow make through the gauntlet of the next three games (UW/UU/UO) with wins, what’s everyone’s opinion on Chip then?

You do realize how ridiculous this hypothetical is, right?
Hold off and ask it if it actually happens.
Ask when it happens. It probably won't.
