Congratulations to our players for an unbelievable display of skill, intelligence, determination, and toughness. Cronin is a great coach. But it happened again. Luck can happen when you do nothing to prevent it. Once again, with limited time left (3.3), the dribbler was allowed to get to halfcourt with no defensive resistance whatsoever. This time the uncontested shot came from about 40 feet. Apply even a little pressure and maybe it’s a heave from 55 feet. The players earned better than this, coach end of game situations better. Thank you to the players and coaches for an incredible run. The future looks very bright for UCLA basketball.
I am sure Cronin made dozens of small adjustments during the game that helped keep UCLA in the game. Most of which a casual fan would not be aware of. With the small attendance you can hear him barking out instructions from the sideline. If they guarded the back court the ball could have been passed into the front court for an even easier shot. Or committed a foul. Who knows. It took a very difficult 40 foot shot to beat us. I can live with that.
Another ill informed observation and comment. Perhaps you should listen to his postgame comments for actual information. Here’s a couple of tidbits. We had no timeouts left to set up a defense. Gonzaga inbounded the ball quickly. Our players were getting back, as they should. Then Suggs got off a 40 foot bank shot over the outstretched arms of David Singleton. Sometimes teams get lucky. It was a great game.
I will give my two cents, and in hindsight it’s so easy to talk about the could have, should have, or would have. I think that the game was “lost” on the last play of regulation. A couple things went “wrong” like not calling a time out for a better designed play. Then, Juzang passing up on a shot that had been his bread and butter throughout the tourney, to drive up and getting called for the charge. I’m positive UCLA would have won the tournament if they would have won last night. No doubt about it! They showed yesterday adaptability, tenacious defensive, and a conscious effort of scoring capabilities from all members of the team. I never truly understood the meaning of great players not losing a game but running out of time, but sadly today I can say that UCLA didn’t lose the game, they just ran out of time.
Totally agree. I won't go bananas over the final (lucky bank) shot in this game, either. ;-) Despite the outcome, I thought both teams had an equal chance of winning the game. Just unfortunate that Juzang committed the charging foul instead of taking a jump shot or passing off to an open teammate at the end of regulation, or that Coach Cronin didn't have a timeout available to reset his defense for those last few seconds in OT.
Yes! Exactly what my sisters and I thought when we were watching the game. It took them a long time to show the replay. It is unfortunate, UCLA had a great shot at winning the game but I mean not much you could do now
