UCLA Baseball Tops 'Cats, 3-2, on Walk-Off Walk
The Bruins beat Arizona last night on a bases loaded walk-off walk to Jack Filby.
Last night, the UCLA baseball team mirrored the Bruin softball team, which went into the final inning with a tie score. At Easton Stadium, the softball team won on a walk-off double, the baseball team, however, only needed a walk-off walk to beat the Arizona Wildcats. This afternoon, UCLA looks for the series win when they play UofA again at 2 pm PT. While the game won’t be televised, it will be live streamed.
Last Time Out
Zach Pettway threw one of the best games he’s had this season, holding the Wildcats scoreless over five innings. Pettway allowed just three hits while striking out six and walking none.
UCLA rallied in the fourth to get on the scoreboard first. Mikey Perez hit a one-out infield single and Matt McLain followed with a double to left. JT Schwartz drew a nine-pitch walk, forcing Arizona starter Chase Silseth to throw pitch after pitch until he made a mistake which loaded the bases. With two outs, Michael Curialle hit a two-run single to right, scoring Perez and McLain and giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Jarrod Karros gave up a two-out double which led to John Savage opting to turn to Sean Mullen. Unfortunately, Mullen’s third pitch got hit over the wall in left center, tying the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Schwartz singled but was thrown out at second when Jarron Silva laid down a bunt and Arizona’s pitcher threw to second for the force, but leaving Silva on first with the fielder’s choice. Curialle singled and an error advanced Silva to third and Curialle to second. Arizona opted to intentionally walk Noah Cardenas and the bases were loaded with still just one out. Jack Filby was sent to pinch hit for JonJon Vaughns, but Price Preston couldn’t throw a strike for the Cats and Filby walked on four pitches. That forced in Silva from third with the winning run and the Bruins went home happy with a 3-2 win.
Expect another potential pitchers’ dual this afternoon as Jesse Bergin (3-1, 2.18 ERA) takes the hill for UCLA and southpaw Garrett Irvin (0-1, 3.38 ERA) gets the start for Arizona.
