Wait, isn’t this the same group from Bruins Nation? Why did you leave?
Yes! And we’re committed to still providing you the same level of coverage of UCLA athletics that you’ve come to expect from us.
Long story short, Vox Media decided to take a hammer approach to California’s new AB5 law, and created a situation where we felt unwelcome on the website we helped build. Luckily, the fine folks at Substack were more than willing to help us get a new site set up.
What’s new/different here?
Well, for one thing, Substack isn’t set up exactly the same as it was at our previous site, and the biggest difference for you may be the lack of Fanposts or Fanshots. We know the ability to write something longer is important to you, and it’s how many of our writers got our start on the site, so we’re working with Substack to come up with a solution to this. For now, if you have a Fanpost you want to make, go ahead and send it to themightybruin@gmail.com and we’ll look at posting it on your behalf.
Everything else should be similar. There’s still a comment section with live updating, and Substack is committed to building out its community tools, especially with a new influx of sports-based sites coming over.
How do I report posts that violate the Community Guidelines?
If you see a post that violates the Community Guidelines, please send us an email at themightybruin@gmail.com. We’ll try to get to it as quickly as possible, but please have patience with us, since we’re a small outfit.
I see I can subscribe to the site. Does that mean I have to pay monthly to read the articles?
Not necessarily. We’ll still have a ton of free content as we always do, including game threads when those eventually come back, but there will be some paywalled content in the future. The paid subscriptions are a way to thank our writers for the time they devote to putting this site together for you.
We understand, especially with the current pandemic, that you may feel uncomfortable becoming a paid subscriber or be able to afford to subscribe right now. We just hope that, once this passes and coverage can return to a closer approximation of “normal”, that you would be willing to jump on board to support the site.
That said, we are offering The Mighty Bruin Launch Special. If you pay for six months, you’ll get a full-year subscription! So, right now, a full-year will only cost you $30, instead of the usual $50 for a full year or $60 for 12 months individually.
I want to join the writing team! How do I do that?
Awesome! Feel free to send us an email at joe@themightybruin.com to express your interest. It would be helpful if you could include a writing sample and a list of topics you’d like to cover, but the main thing required is a passion for UCLA athletics.
I got some insider information. How do I get it to you guys?
We’re not a publication that traditionally breaks news, and we try to have verified information before we post about things. Furthermore, we try not to post information from other paywalled sites out of courtesy to them, and wait until information enters the public sphere. By all means, if you have a hot tip, feel free to send an email at joe@themightybruin.com and we will look into it.
I have a question that I don’t see here!
Feel free to email us at themightybruin@gmail.com or ask your question in the comments, and we’ll try to answer them as best we can.
Welcome, and…..
Go Bruins!!!
I left BRO several years ago because Tracy deleted several of my comments. Each one was for the same reason. I liked Tracy because to me he gave his opinion, whether good or bad, about the AD, football & basketball coaches, players, athletic dept. policies etc.. What I did was kid him about a couple of game predictions that he made that turned out way off. So I wanted to know who he predicted to win in the next weekend's game so that I could pick the other team. The next day my comment was deleted. Wow! If someone is so thin skinned as a moderator then I am out of there. Besides, BRO was really made up of the ole' boys club, so ANY criticism from them towards Tracy was always OK.
So, is my making fun of a TMB writer similar to what I wrote above against policy?
How long will the $30 for a year be available? The reason I ask is there isn't much happening now and I plan to pay but would rather pay when sports return. If you haven't decided yet, I understand fully. Thanks.
