“At the same time, I’m not sure that if UCLA needed to score a touchdown on the final drive that they would have won either.” Do you mean wouldn’t, if you’re okay with double negatives?

All I can say is that over the years, UCLA has exhibited a high tolerance for mediocre coaches. Kelly fooled everyone. He sits on a gravy train. Win or lose bothers him little as long as he does well in the money column. The buyout clause is a two edged sword indeed. Sure it protects coaches from capricious dismissal without just cause. But look at how Kelly's contract was negotiated. The earlier he was let go for just cause - which should have been the case in hindsight - the more it would cost the university for doing so. What can I say ?!?

Given the depths to which the program has fallen and the factors including scheduling, location, and traffic which will always mitigate against attendance, I still believe it will take years of a hugely successful program to escape the abyss. The ship sailed a while ago!

Does anyone have the mailing address for the So Alabama coach? I would like to send a thank you note for that incredible gift he gave us yesterday. What a wonderful surprise, and it was so thoughtful. He is definitely going on my Christmas card list.

"I don’t care if you’re getting the ball back to start the second half or not. Take a shot at the end zone." -- honestly, never understood why coaches allow getting the ball to start the 2nd half to factor into whether or not they want to score more points in the first half.

Outside of Moras coaching ability, attendance never felt like a problem under him. With Chip - yikes.

It’s his ego. He’s unwilling to ‘sell himself’ to 16 and 17 year old’s that very often will go somewhere else. As far as attendance, I’m sure he cares but it’s just like everything else with this guy, nothing is ever his fault and we (fans, media, etc. ) don’t know what we are talking about. His attitude is the ‘Greg Popovich of college football’ but without the winning.

UCLA students and fans are basically treated like the visiting team at their own stadium. First thing Kelly did when he got hired was to remove the team from walking through the fans on their way to the stadium. This was a highlight for a lot of fans that wanted to cheer for, and see the players before the game. Then they move the visiting fans behind the south end zone, where they can be a bigger factor for their team. They also get a better view of the video board than the UCLA students do. When possible the wife and I would take our son and his friends to games and sit in the GA seats. We did this even when we had season tickets. That made it affordable for us to pay for some friends of my sons to attend the game. For some of them it was their first college game attended. Now we don't like to do that, we have to sit next to the fans of the other team. Yes we can go to the north end zone. But as a home fan, why should we have to look behind us to see the replays. UCLA needs to put the visiting fans back to where they sat for so many years, and give the UCLA students and there fans the prime seating areas.

It was a very ugly game. I’m less worried about the offensive miscues than I am about the poor defense. Bowling Green surprised Marshall on Saturday. It waa probably hard for Marshall to focus after beating the Irish.

Sadly, UCLA did not win this game; South Alabama lost it.

That is a pretty good summation of the Chip Kelly era.
