Sadly, we don't play Ohio St. for a few years. πŸ˜’ However, I sincerely hope this rumor or "report" is accurate. This guy has become worse than a cancer at our beloved school and has been a big part, along with Jarmond of tanking the entire football program at UCLA. Let's hope with Kelly leaving, Jarmond will be the next to be shown the exit. His decision making at the end of this past season has been criminal for UCLA Athletics and has now (again if this is true) completely made the UCLA football program toxic. Jarmond is now left "holding the bag" after sticking his neck out for Kelly and giving him another year. Both these individuals look really bad to the entire UCLA community right now.

Again, Kelly knows he only had one year left and he would be toast, everyone knows that, so he was desperate to get out now and find some new "sucker" to hire him. According to our "resident expert" Evan, Kelly wanted to leave because of the changing landscape of college athletics (NIL, Conf Re-Alignment, Portal, etc.), hence his desperation to get to the NFL. Of course, now given this news, the analysis from Evan is obviously wrong but again it's Evan, so there is that.

I mean, I would still buy that Kelly is sick of recruiting especially in this new era. Ohio State doesn't need their offensive coordinator to be a recruiter at all.

Expand full comment

But they do recruit. Day has all his first line coaches recruiting, that's his style and in fact he usually puts either his OC or DC in charge of that area. He, himself doesn't completely run that show, he manages it from a far by interfacing with his OC and DC, depending upon who he puts in charge for that recruiting season. So no, the reason Kelly is bailing is he knows he was already on borrowed time.

I see, in addition to being a kind of an asshole by throwing shots at Evan for absolutely no reason, you also have a crystal ball to Chip Kelly's motivations and his talks with Ryan Day about what his new position would entail, and like to pretend to be an expert about Ohio State. Brian Hartline and Tony Alford are still there on the offensive side, and Ryan Day's last OC hire was Bill O'Brien, who has absolutely no history of wooing top recruits especially compared to Alford and Hartline. It's clear Ryan Day didn't feel the need for a recruiter at OC.

DD... probably not a good idea to call BB an a**h*le since BB is one of the kindest and most respected Bruins here...

Haven't seen you comment much in this community, but clearly you are heading down a path where you likely won't have too many friends if any.

I'm sorry I offended you. Evan has been very outspoken with regards to keeping the Chipster (OG) and basically disses anyone who has an opposing view, so recently he was on another MB story and stated the Chipster (OG) was leaving (or attempting to leave) because of all the changes in College Football; NIL, Recruiting/Portal, Conference Re-Alignment (but specifically NIL). I disagreed with him and again got "dissed". I believe the Chipster (OG)'s move to Ohio St does not get him away from NIL, Recruiting/Portal or Conference Re-Alignment if he takes a job that still has all those three components in play, whether people think he will be directly involved or not. In addition, I'm not sure how effective an OC can be without having the talent to run that offense? The Chipster (OG) and Day will have specific plans for OSU's offense, and they will need to recruit to fit those plans. How an OC can effectively install that offense without the right bodies at the right positions or the right bodies that "the coaches" agree should be at those positions is very foreign to me. I'm not sure how effective an OC can be without any voice or any input into who the school recruits. Perhaps that's why Day's offenses haven't been that great in recent years? Not sure.

An NFL job of course would get the Chipster (OG) completely away from NIL, Recruiting or Conf Re-alignment, so if the Chipster (OG) went to Vegas or Seattle or one of the other NFL teams rumored, this need to escape the crazy college football scene as an excuse to get out of Westwood would make more sense. But to take another college position (lower position at that), which still has all those "crazy" intangibles still involved tells me he knew he would be fired next season, so he's getting out now. Evan was saying that NIL specifically is driving ALL coaches out of college football, another statement I disagreed with (never use such a definitive word as ALL, it sort of ruins the argument). Using the Chipster (OG)'s need to move back to the NFL, Evan stated he is getting away from all that College nonsense and that's why he's looking to leave. Sorry, I think this move illustrates that simply isn't the case. So now, which is obvious, no other NFL team wanted the Chipster (OG), so he figured the next best thing would be to attempt to get to another College team (by any means) just to escape what he has obviously destroyed in Westwood and with the knowledge that he only had a year left anyway. Thanks Tamara for the support, much appreciated.

No one needs that kind of behavior toward any of our community members here. Thanks.

I think its possible elements of both might be true but in the end, whether the house fell on him or the bucket of water melted him - at least the witch is dead!

Expand full comment

Yes, and he screwed UCLA royally going out the door, yet we still have apologists defending him. You see when people say, "Oh the Chipster (OG) is leaving because of NIL, portal, etc" they aren't saying he is a lousy head coach, which he obviously is based on his body of work. They are actually saying he is a good head coach, it's "just the system that has caused all of this". They are discounting this guy's obvious failures and the fact he has cratered the football program at UCLA, most likely for quite some time. So sorry if I say the NIL argument is BS, that argument doesn't even float in my toilet. But to your point of "both may probably be true", well if that were the case, then why did the Chipster leave a school because he presumably wants to get away from NIL, Portal, etc. and the go right back into a school that has to deal with NIL, Portal, conference re-alignment, why not go to the NFL? Well, first off, the NFL is on to the Chipster (OG) scam (they all realize he is a lousy coach), secondly the defenders are saying "Well, at Ohio St. he won't be involved with any of those things (NIL, Portal/Recruiting, Conference re-alignment" Really? That makes no sense.

Spot on BB. But... I am praying for another Coach Wooden - a girl can dream. πŸ’™πŸ’›

Football version of course! 😊

Ah, but there is still that pesky little issue, Martin Jarmond, yes you can dream, but with this guy your chances are really low. I'm pretty rusty on statistics and probability, it's been a long time since my UCLA Statistics days. I'd have to say the probability you even get a version of Jim Mora Jr (not that great of a hire either) is pretty low. πŸ˜’πŸ˜’

Hopefully good long term, but in the short term its going to get real dark.

I totally agree with you. We were already on a downward path, but Chip ejecting now is even more harmful than if he'd been canned at the end of the season, or probably if he stayed another year and was let go then. But since we have to go through the darkness at some point, it just as well should be as soon as possible. That gets us closer to some light.

Let the UCLA rebuild begin! Oh and Chip you’ll have to win immediately if not sooner at tOSU or the entire staff will be gone. You’re not getting a multi-year long leash there…

Correct, if Day loses to Michigan next year, he's gone. No matter what he does with the other 11+ games.

Thank you for stating the facts so accurately!

If this holds,

No Chip = huge win

Chip has to pay UCLA $1.5M to buyout contract = small win

Leaving HC position for OC position = damning statement on condition of UCLA football

Chip leaving now = very few quality HCs given the cycle of hiring just ended

This is all on Jarmond and he should be next out the door. Renewing Chip was a disaster.

Completely agree, this should even illustrate to a lame Duck Chancellor Block that Jarmond isn't up to this job, he simply is over his head.

There are rumors that Jarmond wanted to fire Chip, but Block allegedly vetoed it.

It's doubtful we will ever know the facts on that, but if it's true, then this is Gene's parting gift to Bruin fans.

Even if this is true, Blockhead still has grounds to fire Jelly 2.0 (aka Jarmond) for his overall body of work with UCLA Athletics, which hasn't exactly been blowing the roofs off the NCAA these past few years. So, fire him now for poor performance; UCLA baseball πŸ˜’ UCLA Mens Basketball πŸ˜’ UCLA Men's Waterpolo πŸ˜’ UCLA Women's softball πŸ˜’ Shall I continue...

He has grounds, but he won't do anything. Block has at every step tried to avoid any confrontational or bold moves within the athletic dept - see: allowing the Alford hire and Dan Guerrero working until retirement. He's not going to do anything as daring as replacing an AD now when he is so close to his own soft landing.

Expand full comment

How about firing Jelly 2.0 Jarmond, then stating he will let the new Chancellor appoint a new AD. This would at least show he is "still on the job" and it would help resurrect the Athletic program. Although you are correct, Blockhead would care less about anything regarding the Athletic program and he would even care even less about what happens to the University as a whole, which he has sadly proven many times now. This gets back to that rumor that Blockhead told Jelly 2.0 Jarmond not to fire the Chipster (OG). I don't believe he did because a.) he'd care less what happens in the Athletic Dept and b.) There was some talk that Jelly 2.0 Jarmond never presented Blockhead with that specific proposal. I believe it was b, mainly because Jelly 2.0 Jarmond most likely felt the price tag to remove the Chipster (OG) was just too high, and he was already swimming in red ink.

It really speaks to the institutional nature of major college sports these days. Sure, Saban was a brilliant coach but without a supportive AD, school admin, and fan base, Alabama isn't the Alabama we know.

I'll give a bit of a pass to our fan base which has been beaten down for the better part of two decades and consistently for the last several years. The fans are understandably wary of going all in to back a failing program. But Chip, Jarmond, and Block get no such excuse. It's their job and they all have failed the football program.

Btw, similar screeds to Dimitri's Feb. 2 were all over the internet for the past week.

The sad part is as Yahoo Sports Bromberg reports "The Bruins' 2024 recruiting class ranks just 83rd in the country and when you count transfers along with recruits, UCLA only moves up to 69th in Rivals' rankings." In addition, Jarmond "sincerely thanked Chip for his service over the last six seasons"--excuse me while I vomit.

I'm wondering if any of the talking heads mentioned that UCLA is #17 out of a total of 18 teams in the Big-18 recruiting this year? And that's right at present time. Remember with a coaching change every UCLA football player on the current roster can now immediately enter the portal and go somewhere else. This is a total disaster for UCLA football, the timing is horrendous and the Chipster (OG) is giving the middle finger to Jarmond, the UCLA Administration, the boosters and alumni and the entire school. Well, we knew 2024 was going to be rough, but now I'm wondering if UCLA can even field a team! 1-11 or 2-10 aren't exactly a good record to grow upon. In 2025, UCLA does play Ohio St. but we play them there. In fact, in 2025, we also have to play Georgia the first game of that season in the Rose Bowl. No wonder the Chipster(OG) wanted to get out of town.

Expand full comment

BB... We may indeed have a huge struggle ahead, and Chipster Alfraud needed to be gone after his first few losing seasons. Timing is horrific and that's on Jelly 2.0 abd Blockhead. Jelly 2.0 needs to hit the Exit but that won't happen with lame duck Blockhead still in the building.

But despite all the overwhelming obstacles, I am still celebrating CA's exit and holding out hope that against all odds, Jelly 2.0 accidentally makes a good hiring decision., with Wasserman and Aikman staying the Hell out of it.

Expand full comment

I echo the Wasserman and Aikman NON-INVOLVEMENT move, but the good part of this Chipster (OG) move is that now NO ONE WILL LISTEN TO CASEY WASSERMAN AGAIN. Because he also put his foot in his mouth and the Chipster (OG) burnt him as well. I like the Jelly 2.0, good nickname and as for Jelly 2.0, I believe no matter what happen with Blockhead and Jelly 2.0 regarding the Chipster (OG)'s situation, Blockhead can still fire Jelly 2.0 (for his overall performance, which is judged by how well all the Athletic teams do) and should even before the new Chancellor comes in. Why leave the Athletic Dept a toxic mess for the new person. It's time to CLEAN HOUSE. LET THE AXE FALL NOW!!

From head coach at UCLA to offensive coach at Ohio State -- a huge step down for Coach Kelly.

Unless the Chipster (OG) has calculated that Day's days are numbered! The Chipster (OG) may be positioning himself for another head coaching gig at OSU in the future. If Ryan Day loses to Michigan next season, he's gone and everybody knows it, step in the Chipster (OG). He will have one year at OC and has recent college head coaching experience, a perfect fit or so the OSU brass would stupidly believe.

I hope Chip thinks he's in line for the tOSU job because now I'm actively rooting against the ahole, and after his most recent HC efforts I can't imagine the tOSU fans would settle for him. I was bummed for Neu and Mora not working out, but I didn't wish them evil. I hope Chip fails like crazy.

The only problem is that with Harbaugh gone to the Chargers, tOSU might actually get Michigan next year.
