I don't, for quite some time already. Many on the fence previously also seemed to have realized belatedly that UCLA football under Chip Kelly simply would not compete well, period. You can hire the wrong coach. Many programs experienced it. But to procrastinate, dither, not being decisive enough to pull the plug and start anew with someone else is vintage UCLA athletic trademark in recent years. Not that we must win at all costs, but the willingness to tolerate, to accept mediocrity now in favor of better days ahead is rather astounding to me. Everyone can see that such premise, as evidenced by the ill conceived extension, only works in the minds of the ignorant, the naive and perhaps the retarded. To think that most of us - not merely fans but alums - would buy into it is indeed infuriating and insulting. I have no words but to imagine one day, strolling by the Wooden statue, some students might feel an eerily slight shudder emanating from the hallowed structure. It could be him wondering. What ? Has the stellar program I cemented onto the NCAA landscape sunk that low already ?

Almost 6 years of Chip Kelly and UCLA has never had a top 3 finish in the Pac-12. I remember when he was hired the belief we would be vying for a Pac-12 Championship in a few years and we have never been close. I think it’s time for Chip to leave as this season has shown we are no where near elite, but much closer to mediocre in football. As an alumnus of UCLA (‘87) I am so disappointed and ready for a change.

What network is carrying UCLA vs St. Francis? The UCLA website says it should be on the Pac-12 network, but my Spectrum channel guide shows other programs scheduled for 8:30 pm on my Pac-12 channels.

Nevermind. I'm one day off. Game is tomorrow.

We must be on the same wavelength since I was thinking about poor Rick Neuheisel today and how he was the only one really recruiting out of his coaches and never got a chance to have his classes mature nor was he ever given the funds to hire quality coaches. He said so in his exit interview. Jim Mora agreed with him and they gave Mora the promise of a new training facility and some more funds. I was hoping someway that we could have Neuheisal come back to the program in some capacity, it broke my heart to see him lose his dream job.

About the only thing that is elite about UCLA football under Chip Alford is their meal program. Anyone still believing that he can lead the Bruins to success is delusional. If Washington and Oregon were on this year's schedule, the Bruins' conference record would've been even worse. The switch to the Big10 next season will be brutal.

"Chip Alford"

That's perfect!

So, USC just fired their defensive coordinator. But UCLA keeps Chip Kelly, our "offensive genius" LOL. That figures. You find all sorts of examples of teams unloading coaches who do not perform and are held accountable, except for UCLA of course. They hang on to these losers for an elongated period of time in the hope that these failures somehow deliver on what was originally promised and of course to drive more alumni and season ticket holders away. Face it UCLA, you have a losing football program and it's the fault of the current head coach. He needs to go now. Yes, I know all the contract BS and the cost, but it is costing UCLA more by keeping this anchor of a head coach. Unload him now!

I made some comments on this in the game thread. I’m really over Chip. He doesn’t have any passion for winning and I think it drives his behavior in other areas. He doesn’t recruit, and the portal can’t fix gaping holes in personnel. Yes, there are a few quality transfers each year, but I don’t think anyone has brought in the majority of a winning team this way. Colorado tried this year and they still need heaps of players. SUC tried and improved but they’re not a top tier team. I honestly think Chip is just happy drawing up plays, and experimenting with whoever is on the team at the time. He was asked last week about personnel and said he didn’t check or care which specific player was in the game when he calls the plays. It’s something that us fans keep pointing out - that he’s wasting talent and not designing the offence to work with the strengths and weaknesses of the players. I thought UCLA should have fired him after year 2, before the recruiting issue poisons the well for the next coach, but here we are. I don’t wish the Bruins a losing season, but feel like we’ll see the end of him at the end of a bad 2024.

One last point - there was a fan posting that Moore was definitely going to transfer. I don’t really know what will happen with him, but he looked broken mentally (and then physically) in this game. If I were someone in his circle, I’d tell him to look for a team with a good, young, and deep line, and a system designed for a pocket passer. Transfer, take a redshirt year, get your head and body right, and then you’ve set yourself up for success. It’s probably a year or 2 more in school than you planned, but you might still go in the top of the draft. Moore can throw an amazing ball, but Chip is unwilling or unable to provide a scheme that works with his skill set.

One more last point :). We came into this year deep at QB. 5 QBs saw action in 1 game. But we might exit this year with several injured QBs, and no direction at this position for the future.

Well said, J. Chip simply does not care. Never has. Never will. Jarmond can and must end this nightmare. We shall see.

NOT EVEN CLOSE! Mediocre at best. I believe part of the problem the football program has remained mediocre is due to fact Donahue remained at the helm far to long. And with Kelly, it’s a lost cause. If you consider if the portal didn’t exist, having Kelly to rely on his recruiting, where & how good would his teams be? Maybe four win seasons?

Expand full comment

You can't throw hypotheticals like that into the discussion. The transfer portal exists. It isn't going away any time soon.

We need a coach who will:

1. Recruit top talent.

2. Fill in the gaps from the Portal.

3. Coach up and develop the talent in the Program.

4. Win titles.

Not necessarily in that order.

Since when can’t I use hypothetical in any discussion? And yes, I realize the portal will be there, but for how long? We are going to see new restrictions this upcoming season. I thought there were a number of coaches still against the transfer portal? And I agree with you as far as the needs of a head coach but aren’t your points the same ones every program and coaches try to establish? Isn’t Kelly’s approach to recruiting,”it’s an honor if I come to recruit you?” And he isn’t interested in 4 or 5 star recruits? From onset of his tenure, he wanted a Stanford like system? And does the GPA of a college athlete really matter? No one is going to convince me all 85 new recruits at Colorado were eligible.

Everything all of you said about Chip. I hope Jarmond has the cojones to get rid of Kelly this December. Otherwise it's another year of the SOS. Why does a guy get paid so much for a record that's barely over .500?

Expand full comment

He's not only getting paid by UCLA, but he is also still getting paid from Oregon, Philadelphia and San Francisco. He's got this wired. He goes to each team, fails, gets fired and collects his checks. I'm betting he's definitely the best paid coach in College Football by at least a few million!
