1) Joe, I've really enjoyed your articles and features going back to previous platforms; keep up the good work.
2) The extermination of "Simulcast" capability - when one could no longer watch the Bruins (or any other athletic endeavor for that matter) on network TV with the sound turned down, while simultaneously listening to Bruins' radio broadcasts - was pretty much the "that's it" turning point for me as since, I've been a fairly serious cord-cutter. I won't get to watch tonight's finale for example.
That stated, I'd like to ask all who care to reply, whether or not you - as I do - think the emergence of "The PAC12 Networks" played any part in the demise of the greatest athletics conference the Nation has ever seen?
3) In concert with #2, I lived in Cincinnati for just under 3 years on a contract, and it happened to be during the period during which Leinart, Bush and co. were demolishing nearly everybody. My first Fall back there, my wife had gotten a consulting job at a very nice wine/cheese boutique that also had an excellent little bar in it. I went to pick up the wifey from work and had to wait, so I proceed to the bar and got myself a beer. The Trojans @ Notre Dame was on the TV's in the bar. Bush took the opening kickoff back substantially and SC just marched on em, boom - TD!
I exclaimed "Yeah!" with a little fist pump. Every single head in that joint turned and looked at me....At commercial, a patron comes up to me and says: "Hey man, you're in the wrong part of the Country to be cheering for those fuckers." - Little did he know, SC vs. Notre Dame is the ONLY time I cheer for Trojan football.
During my time in Ohio, I learned of the absolute, to-the-very-soul hatred for both the Bruins and the Trojans in that region. It's "not going to be very pleasant" when either squad trots out onto the field the very first time at Michigan, Michigan State, OSU, or Penn State doesn't convey the half of it....
#1. Yes, Joe has done and continues to do a great job here. His articles are right on, and he backs it up with detailed analysis that cannot be matched by anyone.
#2. No, the reason the conference imploded was because of the current Pac-12 commissioner (George Kliavkoff I believe) refusing to negotiate with TV networks and RE-SCHEDULE Pac-12 games to better times so Pac-12 Athletics could be seen live by more people in the country, instead of forcing people to stay up past midnight back east watching an Oregon St-Stanford game!
#3. The Pac-12 and Big 10 have been opposing conferences in the Rose Bowl since 1947, that's 76 years! It would take a lot to wipe out that kind of dislike and animosity for one another.
Larry Scott had a lot to do with the demise of the Pac 12 through his Pac-12 network deal that was and has continued to be a disaster for fans and a big time financial loser. He mismanaged every aspect of his job from the lame Pac 12 after dark, to the weakest bowl line-up of the Power 5 conferences, along with poor media deals. He had no love for the Pac 12. He was purely about ego and money just like Donut Dan and Chip. George K is even worse if that's possible and I am happy to say 'so long chief' to this loser as well.
I will be watching the game tonight just because I bleed blue and gold and can't miss it. But if we lose, at least the fire may be re-lit in the dumpster that is Chip. Wonder what his attire will be if the weather drops to the 50s - saggy classless t-shirt or...
FYI, it has snowed here in Utah and is spectacularly gorgeous so I am thankful for the quiet peaceful blanket of white amidst the turmoil of our football program.
I don't think either cared as long as they had their big fat paychecks. I do believe they knew exactly what they were doing - enriching themselves at the cost of every fan.
I remember driving by the modest and likely affordable PAC12 offices in Walnut Creek. IIRC Larry Scott moved the offices to downtown San Francisco, bought a jet, etc. Lots of money out the door. Anyone know what happened to the media money that was overpaid and needed to be repaid? So sad on so many levels.
Hi Jim! The Wasatch Front is a beauty. It's in the low 30's here but when that sun shines on the snow, nothing better! Hope to see you on the thread for our final (thank goodness) Pac 12 after dark.
Fuck Digger, losing TWICE to the asshole of asshole's, Bobby Knight stung a hell of a lot more. That was Bartow's first year as head coach and he was NOT the fit for that mega-talent laden roster. The Bruins were humbled twice by an Indiana team they more than out-manned, but hey, a good tool in the hands of a poor workman.
I started grad school and got my first season tickets the year after Coach retired. At that time I was unaware of the B-ball aristocracy. I thought Gene got a raw deal and enjoyed seeing Marquez Johnson play.
I think Scott has to shoulder the lion's share of the blame. There was a brief shining moment when the PAC 12 could've absorbed the Big 12 I think it was but Scott somehow screwed the pooch. Then later when he came up with the abomination that is the PAC 12 network that pretty much put the writing on the wall. I am a 1988 graduate and have been a fan ever since but I could not figure out how to get the PAC 12 network without buying a buncha other crap I don't want or need. The B1G otoh makes their network available in like 100 different ways.
In other news... Michigan State just hired Smith from Oregon State whom I do not believe to be a great coach but much better than the Chipster.
It's amazing how our BIG brethren hire coaches so easily while UCLA Football slogs through the quicksand with Jarmond and Chip watching safely from the beach.
It's Cal and the prolate spheroid. I remember facing Cal in Pauley. Our band was below, to my left, one of the band stood up and yelled to the Cal band, across the court to my right. "Hey, Cal, it may be your song but this is how it goes!"
Couple of things, and I welcome retort:

GO BRUINS! BEAT CAL!

Go Bruins! 💙💛
Is Scott (and Dan) aware of his legacy?
I don't think either cared as long as they had their big fat paychecks. I do believe they knew exactly what they were doing - enriching themselves at the cost of every fan.

I guess we won't know about thw media money fiasco until the Pac 12 or Pac 2 sort it out. So much lacks transparency, it's unbelievable.
My guess is we'll never know sadly.
27 out here, Tamara, but fortunately no snow. And there is nothing quite as pretty as the Wasatch Front. regardless of season.
Go Bruins!

I dunno, how long I can make it Tamara, but I'm going to give it a try, for old times sake.
Thanks to both of you for your kind words. I try. 😁
I really learned to write back in high school and it came in handy as a Poli Sci major in the early 90s as well as my time here and at BN.
"SC vs. Notre Dame is the ONLY time I cheer for Trojan football."
Sophie's choice akin to Duke v Kentucky.
I so hated seeing Digger and ND beat us in Pauley.

Preeecisely! Well stated.....
In other news... Michigan State just hired Smith from Oregon State whom I do not believe to be a great coach but much better than the Chipster.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't this the final regular season PAC 12 game in history? I'd watch for that alone...GO BRUINS!
Yup. That’s why we drove down from the Bay Area. End of an era. Go Bruins!
Good evening, Bruin Mama! Nice to see you, go Bruins!
Oh no, Walton!
It's Cal and the prolate spheroid. I remember facing Cal in Pauley. Our band was below, to my left, one of the band stood up and yelled to the Cal band, across the court to my right. "Hey, Cal, it may be your song but this is how it goes!"
Bump, bump, bump, a bumpa, bumpa! Go Bruins!
C'mon. O-line!
Loya! First down at the Cal 22!
SPTRS!
That's our Bruins!
Who's here?
FG. Cal scores first! ;)
Steele for 12!
Man of Steele!
Go for it!
Harden for 16 and red zone!
Missed another FG, the season continues.
