It’s been about a month and a half since the Washington State Cougars won a game at home and it’s been more than two month since they won a conference game at home. Tonight, that could change if UCLA is still missing Cody Riley and Jalen Hill.
In his press conference on Tuesday, Mick Cronin said that Riley is “day to day” and Hill is still out with “personal issues.” He didn’t seem to know when Hill would be back, but Riley could play depending on how his ankle feels. It seems pretty safe to assume that both players will miss tonight’s game.
On the other hand, Washington State might just be what the doctor ordered for a Bruin team that looked bad compared to the Trojans last Saturday night.
When these teams met in Westwood last month, UCLA crushed the Cougars, 91-61. Since that meeting, the Bruins have gone just 3-2 while the Cougars have gone 2-5.
Unfortunately, the real unknown here is how much the Bruins will miss Riley and Hill. Riley scored 12 points against the Cougars in January while Hill only had four points. The bigger difference might be seen on the boards. Hill led the team with seven rebounds last time while Riley was second with six. Each player grabbed four of their boards defensively.
So, it would seem that the key to tonight’s game for the Bruins will be keeping Washington State to get a second or third shot.
That said, I still think the Bruins win tonight’s game by at least ten. It just won’t be the 30-point blowout was saw at Pauley.
