How To Watch, Game Preview and Game Thread: #19/20 UCLA Bruins vs. Sacramento State Hornets
The Hornets are the first team new head coach Mike Bibby has coached in college.
After Friday’s close loss to Arizona, UCLA fell four spots in this week’s basketball polls.
Tonight, the Bruins return to the friendly confines of Pauley Pavilion for a game against the Sacramento State Hornets. This evening’s game will be the fourth meeting between the schools ever and their first meeting since 2022. UCLA has won all three previous games.
Sacramento State is on their third head coach in 18 months. David Patrick, who was the Hornets’ coach when they visited Pauley in 2022, left to become an assistant wih LSU last May. As a result, Michael Czepil was named interim head coach and led the team to a 7-25 record last season. On March 25, 2025, Mike Bibby was named as the Hornets’ new head coach.
Additionally, Dr. Shaquille O’Neal was named the Hornets’ basketball general manager after his son Shaqir agreed to transfer from Florida A&M.
Speaking of transfers, I think the Hornets have set an NCAA record. Every player on last year’s team is gone and every new player is a transfer student-athlete who came from another school. Every. Single. One.
Starting Five
Look for Bibby to start a three-guard, two-forward lineup. Two of the team’s three guards are senior Prophet Johnson and sophomore Mikey Williams. Each of these guys is averaging 16.4 ppg. Johnson is averaging 9.8 rpg while Williams is averaging just 3.0 rpgs.
The team’s third guard is junior Jahni Summers. Summers comes to Sac State from Indiana State. He’s averaging 7.4 ppg and just 2.0 rpg.
Senior forward Jeremiah Cherry, who is also known as “Bear,” leads the team in scoring with an average of 18.2 ppg and he’s averaging 9.5 rpg and
Last but not least, Shaqir O’Neal is the team’s last scoring starter. O’Neal is averaging just 4.0 ppg. So, he clearly is underperforming compared to expectations. He has also grabbed 2.6 rpg.
While this game should be over by halftime, it won’t be because Mick Cronin loves toying with different player matchups. So, I expect UCLA will start to try to play their game. But they are likely to swept into a tighter game, as a result.
I look forward to another Bruin win tonight. It just won’t be easy the way it should be.
