The Bruins’ surge continued on Wednesday night when they defeated Stanford, 82-74. That was the most points the team has scored all season. UCLA has now won four in a row and six of their last seven games.
After the win over Stanford, UCLA is now tied for fourth place with the Colorado Buffaloes, just a game behind Oregon and Washington State who are tied for second and two games behind Arizona who leads the Pac-12.
If the Bruins can win this afternoon, they will come out of the weekend tied for third because Oregon and Washington State play today as well and one of them will lose.
Over the past seven games, UCLA has averaged 71.5 points per game while allowing 64.8.
One guy who has really played well for the Bruins over the last seven games in Lazar Stefanovic. Over that stretch, he’s averaged 15.3 ppg. He’s also shooting 44.3% from the field and 45.7% from beyond the arc.
UCLA is also 10-3 this season when they hold their opponents to 65 points or less.
UC Berkeley Golden Bears
The Golden Bears have won four of the last five games at home. Their only home loss in 2024 came against Washington. During that time, they’ve won games over both Colorado and Washington State.
So, Mark Madsen has the Bears playing well at home.
As far as starters go, look for Madsen to start the same five guys he did against the Bruins when the teams met in Westwood.
Since they met on January 6th, Jaylon Tyson has played even better than he had been playing. He’s increased his scoring average from 19.9 ppg to 20.3 ppg. He also put up 22 in Westwood.
The good news is that the rest of the starters have actually seen a slight decrease in production. Fardaws Aimaq’s average has dropped from 15.7 to 15.3 ppg while Jalen Cone has dipped from 14.4 to 14.2 ppg. Even Jalen Celestine’s scoring has fallen from 8.4 ppg to 8.2 ppg now.
Keonte Kennedy is the guy whose scoring has dropped most. He was averaging 11.4 ppg prior to the Bears’ last game against the Bruins, but now he’s averaging just 9.4 ppg. Last month, UCLA held him to just six points.
In other words, the Bears have definitely become more of a one-dimensional team since they played UCLA last month.
If the Bruins can continue to score while containing Tyson as much as possible, they should be able to complete a Bay Area road sweep and find themselves in a tie for third place with seven games left to play.

I had a friend get married in the Bezerkley Rose Garden many years back. It hit 103 in SF, we we're all dressed up and there was a Grateful Dead concert. It took forever to get home to Cupertino. Freeway traffic was jammed due to a burning VW van - go figure.

Tried to get a last minute ticket for the game but they were still $70+ with taxes and fees. Don't know when college basketball tickets got so expensive lol.
Anyway, at home watching but loving this tough defense so far. This team has really turned into a fun group over the last few weeks. Of course, winning is always fun, but the defensive pride and effort is fun to watch.
