How To Watch, Game Preview and Game Thread: #19/20 UCLA Bruins vs. Presbyterian Blue Hose
The Bruins host Presbyterian for the second time ever and the first time since 2018.

Tonight, the UCLA Bruins will welcome the Presbyterian Blue Hose to Pauley Pavilion. The last time the Bruins played the Blue Hose was in 2018. In that game, the UCLA defeated Presbyterian, 80-65. A lot has changed for both programs since that game.
Obviously, Steve Alford is long gone as the coach of the Bruins. Well, Presbyterian head coach Dustin Kerns left after the 2018-19 season to take over at Appalachian State where he remains.
Quinton Ferrell was hired to replace Kerns following the 2018-19 season and the Blue Hose has gone 65-126 since he took over.
This season, the Blue Hose are 3-4 under Ferrell. On Sunday, Presbyterian visited the same Sacramento State team which UCLA defeated 79-48 on Tuesday. The Blue Hose lost that game to the Hornets, 64-62. So, realistically, the Bruins shouldn’t have any trouble tonight.
Let’s look at Presbyterian’s starting five.
Starting Five
Ferrell will probably be starting a lineup featuring three guards and two forwards.
The Blue Hose are led by senior forward Jonah Pierce. Not only is he averaging 15.0 ppg, he is also averging 9.9 rpg. So, don’t be surprised if Pierce pulls off a double-double tonight.
The other starting forward will be redshirt junior Jaylen Peterson. He is second on the team in rebounding with an average of 8.6 per game, but he is only averaging 7.0 ppg. Despite that, Peterson has the highest shooting percentage of the Blue Hose starters. Neither Peterson nor Pierce have taken a three-point shot so far this season.
Among the guards, junior Carl Parrish has the highest scoring average with 14.6 ppg. That puts him second on the team behind Pierce as well. Parrish is Presbyterian’s best three-point shooter. He is shooting 31.9% from behind the arc. Parrish takes more shots than anyone else on the team, but with almost half of his shots being three-point attempts, he also has the lowest shooting percentage of the starters.
Sophomore Triston Wilson is third on the team in scoring with an average of 7.4 ppg. While Wilson has taken the second-most three-point attempts on the team, he’s only making 18.2% of them. So, he is a much lower threat from long range than Parrish.
The final starter should be sophomore guard Josh Pickett. He got his first start of the season on Tuesday against UC Berkeley. Because he’s only averaging 2.7 ppg, don’t be surprised if Ferrell opts to start either Erik Taylor or Iverson King in his place.
Taylor has started four of Presbyterian’s seven games this season and he is averaging 6.2 ppg, making him a better scoring option than Pickett. Taylor also leads the team in assists with 20.
Meanwhile, King has averaged 5.4 ppg. So, he’s averaging double the points that Pickett is. So, if Ferrell wants to optimize the number of points the Blue Hose score, he’s also a better option than Pickett.

Hot take: Brandon Williams is the best rebounder on the team.
Do with that information what you will.
So I get the Select-a-Seat season package, which means during the early season I can grab really low seats to focus on specific things. Today I’m behind the basket on the UCLA side of the court, which means right now I get a real good look at the defense.
I will say, effort is there so far, particularly for Dent. They seemingly put him on the Presbyterian player who’s gonna run off screens all game as a way of challenging him, and he’s doing a good job fighting so far.
