The UCLA Bruins return home tonight to host the Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal come into tonight’s game having lost their Pac-12 opener to Arizona State before upsetting Arizona on Sunday. In addition to beating the #4 team in the nation, Stanford has also beaten Cal State Northridge, to whom the Bruins lost.
As a result, tonight’s game will be a battle even though the Cardinal enters tonight’s game with a 6-6 overall record. Interestingly, that record seems to be right in light with head coach Jerod Haase’s record in his time with the Cardinal. Haase has a 118-115 mark at the school.
Besides Arizona and CSUN, the Cardinal have beaten Sacramento State, Eastern Washington, San Diego and Idaho this season while they’ve dropped games against Santa Clara, Arkansas, Michigan, Northern Iowa, and San Diego State before losing to ASU last weekend.
Interestingly, last season, the Bruins hosted the Cardinal the weekend after Stanford beat Arizona at home and UCLA used a second half surge to defeat the Cardinal. I’m hopeful that history repeats itself tonight.
Let’s look at who is likely to be starting for the Cardinal tonight.
Starting Five
Coach Haase will likely start an unusual lineup consisting of two guards and three forwards. It’s
The Cardinal are led by junior forward Maxime Raynaud, who is averaging 14.4 ppg. Raynaud also leads Stanford in rebounds with an average of 9.4 per game and he is second on the team in blocks with eight.
The team’s other two forwards are second and third on the team in scoring. Spencer Jones is averaging 12.8 ppg while Brandon Angel is putting up 12.7 ppg. Not surprisingly, these guys are two of the Cardinal’s best rebounders as well. Angel is second on the team with an average of 4.6 rpg while Jones is fourth on the team with an average of 4.1 per game.
Guard Michael Jones is in his second season with the Cardinal as a grad transfer. He’s averaging 11.0 ppg and he leads the team with 12 steals.
The only Stanford starter who isn’t averaging in double figures is grad transfer Jared Bynum. The guard who played at Providence last season is averaging 9.3 ppg and he leads the Cardinal with 7.0 assists per game.
Based on last weekend’s action, expect Haase to opt for a nine-man rotation. The first man off the bench looks to be true freshman Kanaan Carlyle, who scored 28 points against Arizona on Sunday. He also put up 12 against ASU last weekend. Overall, he’s averaging 13.3 ppg.
In addition to Carlyle, look for Andrej Stojakovic to see significant minutes. The freshman guard from Carmichael, California, is averaging 9.7 ppg. Grad student James Keefe is back at Stanford for his fifth year, but he’s averaging just 3.8 ppg. Sophomore guard Benny Gealer is the fourth reserve who saw time last weekend. He’s averaging just 4.1 ppg.

Let's see, no defense against 3s and Ferd just buried Zona in 3s. Are we foolish to hope, or just Bruin fans?
