Spot on. I would like to see Lynn replace Kelly as interim coach immediately to give him a chance to show what he could do as a head coach. The season is not looking terribly bright at this point. Kelly is just not a leader IMO.
💯 and if we don't do something to keep Lynn, I believe he may be gone at the first golden opportunity. He seems to have great potential and although the D has weaknesses, it has improved substantially over the Ds in Chip's era at UCLA.
Chip is under .500 and that is simply not acceptable given how many years he has had to be successful here.
Dimitri, spot on analysis especially how Chip is indeed ramming square pegs in round holes and appears to hate this team as he has no ability to adjust his offensive scheme to the talent or lack thereof.
Chip hates recruiting and has no clue how to recruit in a way that creates team chemistry with complimentary skills. I have stated that Chip is driven by ego and money and will not change. He has no love for UCLA and is an embarrassment to the Blue and Gold.
I agree with DBruin in that we should get rid of Chip now! I understand the argument is about buyout $$$ but how much are we losing in ticket revenue and a traditionally empty Rose Bowl. The Colorado game is sold out (with tarps still present) only because of Prime. How very sad.
Jarmond needs to find the courage to make a change if he wants to live up to the excellence that defines UCLA.
Tamara, I think at the present moment the buyout on this idiot is about $4.5 million. Amazing how cheap that sounds NOW, isn't it? Wonder if we mightn't set up collection points outside the RB? Anyone remember the old Steve Martin movie, My Blue Heaven, where he and his gang buddies in the witness protection program collected funds in the old Sparkletts water bottles located at the shopping mall businesses.
When Ucla won the NCAAs in 1995 I read it led to $100 million in new alumini donations. I don't know if that's true but whether the administration likes it or not Ucla Athletics success can be immensely good for the school.
..it will undoubtedly do this. Like chicken soup for the flu: it may not help but certainly cannot hurt!
I certainly do believe that winning will boost the alum donations as it will also put butts in the seats at the RB., In The Chipster's reign of error, the decline in population is reaching Dorrellian proportions!
Speaking of which, Dorrell's record was 35-27 (24-18) over his five seasons and he went to a "toilet" bowl game each of those seasons although he was fired in 2007 and did not coach second Las Vegas bowl. He was 1-3 in bowl appearances.
He was the beginning of UCLA's 16-year wander through the desert and, I am almost embarrassed to admit it, but maybe we shoulda hung onto him..
Another thing about Dorrell, he had us in the Rose Bowl hunt all season, and in two of those years, maybe even three I can't remember (maybe Joe or Dimitri can weigh in?), had we beat SC in the last game we would've been in it.
We gotta stop doing this! Next thing you will have me wondering if we can re-animate Terry Donahue -- or ever better, Tommy Prothro! Here's the poop on Dorrell. He was a sweet kid; bear him absolutely no malice.
I can add nothing to this fine analysis, Dimitri, except to say you did a marvelous job with the snapshots of that play sequence in overcoming the limitations of this substack environment; you turned a handicap into a valuable and instructive lesson. Even a video could not improve on your effort.
I felt as though I was sitting in the film room with the team watching the play-by-play and hearing the coach (a wiser person that Kelly could ever be) calling out every missed blocking assignment or embarrassing misstep!
Spot on, as usual. I did call for Kelly's firing on SMQB, but I lack your maturity and restraint 😆. Still, I think its warranted. The guy is stubborn, and can't, or won't, adapt to his completely different personnel this year. I think he's criticism of the running game!?!? after the game is just him just nakedly avoiding talking about the consistent disaster that is the passing game. Nice try, Chip
I wrote a piece back at the old (Pre Mighty Bruin) site that I was ready to see the end of Chip after year 2. There was a substantial buyout then, and the fiscal black hole hadn’t opened up. Having said that, as long as we retain him I’m not hoping for failure, but rather that we turn a corner. I don’t think Chip is ‘the guy’ that’s going to turn the Bruins into a contender. If we do axe him however, we really need an upgrade, no point in a revolving door. Someone young, who can recruit, and is looking to build something lasting would be good. I really like Lynn a lot, but 6 games is not a large enough sample size to declare greatness in my opinion. One thing I will say about Chip is he never seems emotionally invested in what’s happening. It’s like it’s a cerebral game of chess and trying to show how clever he is. Contrast Cronin - he’s pissed when the team loses and makes his displeasure known, and he celebrates the victories which I think inspires the players. Even Coach Prime, whether you’re a fan of his style or not, it’s clear that winning matters.
Also, I thought his buyout was more like 9m until Dec, and then drops to half that. I’m not a fan of accepting mediocrity , but is there a clear upgrade to be made?
I do believe there is a coach out there who will be the right fit for UCLA. Although I dont have a name or names to offer, I do believe if Jarmond does his research, he can find that hidden gem or gems that could give Bruin fans a fresh beginning - someone like a Coach Wooden 😊💛💙
My oldest son had occasion to visit a PAC-12 roundball game last year in the Bay Area and partied hearty with some Bruin fans and met Mr Jarmond. He reports that the new AD was sort of hip, a hail fellow well met and thoroughly grounded in reality insofar as could be seen. As Jeffro infers, I believe we get the "Pre-Christmas Discount" a month-and-a-half from now.
I share your hope and believe Mr Jarmond is well above the "blind pig finding an acorn" stage and trust his judgment. Sadly, entrance into the "BIG BO" or however they call it, might might cause a delay in pulling the trigger with the timing being a little to tight.
However, this might pay unexpected dividends as The Chipster will probably go 8-4 (if lucky) or 7-5 (dropping a game to one of the 'Zonas) and discarding him after a "winning record" might seem a little precipitous. However, I suspicion that Chipnolia will unleash a horrendous stink bomb in 2024 and the buyout will be even more of a bargain (cf. Jeffro above). An inaugural performance wherein he only has a win against Hawaii (August 31st) and a string of losses will put undue pressure on him. I suspect that Jarmond has this all charted out and is monitoring coach availability as we speak.
Prattling on, I feel that as a BO (B10?) school close to the beach with Los Angeles weather and locale and the opportunity to restore the program to its former (distant past) greatness might be too great a plumb for a lot of coaches to pass up. Also, BO recruits might prefer practicing on late October and November afternoons in Westwood as much more desirable than freezing one's behind off in Columbus or Ann Arbor.
Have a marvy weekend! Enjoy the last opportunity to view a halftime performance by the Leland Stanford Junior University marching band. Last time I saw them was in the RB and the program was "Office Supplies". (No Fooling.)
Ahhhhhhh! Dodged/escaped off of academic probation as did I? I still wake up in a cold sweat after nightmares of those days. A graduate of the school of business, I was almost ground up by the basic accounting classes I had to take. I wised up and took the Accounting 1B equivalent course at Orange Coast College and greased through Managerial Accounting (less hard facts and more "theoretical BS") to get my "Gentleman's B-minus".
Still treasure my "sheepskin" signed by Ronald Reagan (heh!) and, to date, have not had any prospective employer nor client check my GPA.
As you infer, The Chipster shoulda flunked out long, long ago.
My cold sweat wake ups were exclusively for Statistics - genuis Professor who couldn't dumb down Probability for me. Lowest midterm grade I have ever had in my life. Lived in this dude's office post midterm, mastered Regression and aced the final. Celebrated with a bag of Stan's Donuts - innocent times 💛💙
Have to wonder just how many more seasons of underachieving mediocrity and frustrating performances can be tolerated. The lack of effective coaching continues to stunt the development of most of the players. Based on how poorly QB Moore is performing in his 1st year so far, it wouldn't be surprising if he needed 4 more seasons under Chip to figure things out on his own (just like DTR). In addition to his underwhelming regular season record while at UCLA, this overpaid and uninspiring coach has taken the Bruins to just 1 toilet bowl, which was last year's Sun Bowl loss against Pitt. Mighty Bruin fans deserve a much better head coach than Chip Alford!
I too believe that Jarmond is a pretty cool guy who is forward thinking and really loves his job, is a super bright guy, and loves UCLA.
And, now that you mention it, I think you are right about Jarmond eyeing the coaching landscape under the proverbial radar.
If we have to endure the BIG tornedo that will leave us in the dustbin, then I suppose that will be the short term price we must pay. If there is one thing we Bruins Football fans have developed and perfected over the years, it's endurance 🤣
It's truly strange to know that we must say good-bye to so many great bands and memories of the Pac-10-12. The Stanford band has definitely performed some classics for sure 🤣
You have a great weekend too, War. Love our conversations my friend 💙💛

If it makes you feel better Chip is 31-31/.500!!!! Applause please.
You made my day! 🤣
lolololololol
..oh goody goody! I felt as though I have just osculated with my sister.

Betcha we could raise the dough in no time!

Merengue!
I think you are on to something War. Those Sparklett bottles at the mall were classic 🤣
Actually, since we will be making a heck of a lot more dough in the BIG, the $4.5 mil hit is diminished imho.
Time for Jarmond to open the cookie jar and pay Chip to get out of town.

yeah...
Chip Kelly is a clown! He should be fired.

FCK is legend, War 🤣 Well done, my friend
I never watch videos myself...

Dimitri. Your report card for the Oregon State game looks like my first quarter report card at UCLA. I got better. Unfortunately Chip does not.
