We currently have something like 5 quarterbacks. Can we try a different recipe? Or do we play Dante and allow him to loose any bit of self confidence he has left? Over the years Kelly at UCLA has consistently spotted opposing teams 2 touchdowns with turnovers on offense. Agreed....not an offensive genius. Ummm Chip never "peaked" at UCLA. No winning record here. Smoke and mirrors with zero accountability. With a bloated salary. UCLA deserves a lot better.
Just fire him now and get it over with. It's not like he's going to get better. Right now every coach in the history of Ucla has a better win percentage. Every one.
I'm certainly not going to defend Chip at this point, but in the interest of accuracy, this just isn't true, and it doesn't matter how you look at iit.
DeWayne Walker and Mike Johnson each served as interim head coach and they were both winless. If you opt for just permanent head coaches, Harry Potter had a .156 winning percentage over 16 games in 1920-22 and his successor James Cline was just a bit better over 15 games from 1923-24 with a .233 win pct.
Let's say you opt for a minimum of 50 games. Then, there's Rick Neuheisel who had a .420 win pct over his 50 games. Rick also covers any timeframe since the 1954 national championship.
If you raise the bar to a 60 game minimum, there's Edwin Horrell whose .443 win pct in 61 games is worse.
Finally, if you set the minimum to 62 games which is how many Chip has coached, there's still William Barnes who coached 68 games from 1958-1964 and had a .492 win pct.
That isn't to say that it's easy to see that he has clearly worn out his welcome. Nobody cares about UCLA football because he doesn't care to do anything to promote the program. That's a big reason that attendance is down so much.
But to say "every coach in the history of UCLA has a better win percentage" is just false.
I agree that not every coach in UCLA history had a better winning percentage, but who cares. This guy has been toxic since day 1. Now we see him taking a 5* blue chip Quarterback and turning him into a below average/no confidence player in only 6 games! All it took was 6 games of this clown's so-called coaching to ruin this player, most likely permanently. Tired of Kelly's losing, tired of seeing a coach give up before halftime, enough is enough. Get a no name with low expectations and let's see what they can do. Maybe a surprise is on the horizon. But Kelly has to go and go asap. Preferably before they lose to Stanford next week (highly likely).
I wouldn't worry about Kelly's contract, UCLA is now flushed with Big Ten cash, hence they can afford to jettison this loser as soon as they can. New Chancellor will also help as Block was totally clueless about revenue making Athletics. I'd get rid of Kelly as soon as they are able and go for a no-name, that will be a better fit for this type of program, then you'd probably see better recruiting and more winning. Of course, Kelly won't mind, he will then be on four payrolls (Oregon, Philadelphia, San Francisco, UCLA) before suckering another school or media outlet to hire him.
It's been interesting - and impressive - to see what Lance Leipold has going at Kansas. In the recent past Kansas-to-UCLA would have been a jump of about six levels of competition...but Leipold is actually building a program, as he's done at each of his past stops, and Kelly is just treading water. This is simply a thought exercise, as I've never truly contemplated the change so far, but I'm with you on the concept of not shooting for a big name for our next coach. Washington has done pretty well with the Fresno State coach that beat #13 UCLA a couple of years ago.
UCLA won't be "flushed (sic) with Big Ten cash" until we actually join the Big Ten and that doesn't happen until August 1, 2024.
I will have to obtain his contract to see what the exact date the buyout drops will be, but if it's December 1, then firing Kelly before then would make no sense at all. It would be just throwing about $4M away.
Wonder how much they've thrown away on this "program" since Kelly was hired? My guess is way more than $4m. You are suggesting giving him another full season (possibly into 2024), I wouldn't give him another full game!
After experiencing more than 6 seasons of Alford ruining the basketball program, it's so frustrating to have to endure the same ineffective coaching, mediocrity, and false hope with the football program for almost the same amount of time (and counting). At this point, it doesn't matter who the QB is, or how many talented recruits and transfers can join the team. Even though the Bruins may now be capable of winning at least 6 games to get an invitation to some toilet bowl game, they should be much better than that. Just a couple of seasons ago, who would have thought that a lowly Oregon State football program could become such a powerhouse team compared to UCLA? It's even more ridiculous and embarrassing when UCLA administration is forced to beg people to fill seats at the Rose Bowl and cover up the empty sections with tarps. Can't wait until we get a better head coach!
I think we’ve seen peak Chip
He's not the offensive genius that people made him out to be. He sucks.
He's not a defensive or special teams' genius either. In other words, he's totally worthless!
Hahaha ...... I wonder what the Kelly apologists, my detractors have to say now.
That's right !!!!!!!!!! You've said it all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Or do we play Dante and allow him to loose any bit of self confidence he has left?" Too late.
Apathy is far worse than hate... You have to care to hate...
