UCLA Women's Water Polo Visits #17 San José State
The Bruins split their series against Stanford last weekend and should be able to sweep the Spartans this weekend.
After splitting last weekend’s games with Stanford, the UCLA women’s water polo team is back in the Bay Area for a pair of games against the #17 San José State Spartans. Neither game will be broadcast or streamed, but live stats will be available on TheFosh.net. Today’s game begins at 1 pm PT.
Last Time Out
Last Sunday, UCLA earned a weekend split with the Stanford Cardinal after losing to the Cardinal on Saturday, 12-11. The Bruins never trailed in Sunday’s game.
Malia Allen got UCLA on the scoreboard first in the first minute of the game and it stayed 1-0 until the Cardinal tied it up with 5:46 to go in the quarter. Hannah Palmer put the Bruins ahead again just 16 seconds later. Katrina Drake and Bella Wentzel were also able to score in the first quarter and UCLA led 4-1. Stanford cut the Bruin lead with back-to-back goals in the final 1:10 of the quarter and the Bruins led 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
Stanford’s third consecutive goal tied the game in the first minute of the second quarter. That was the only offense the Cardinal could muster in the quarter. On the other hand, UCLA finished the quarter with four consecutive goals to take an 8-4 lead. Allen scored the first and the fourth Bruin goals before halftime, completing her first half hat trick. In between Allen’s goals, Anneliese Miller and Ava Johnson also scored.
Johnson scored again to start the second half, but that was the only Bruin goal of the third quarter. Stanford responded by scoring the next five goal over the rest of the third and start of the fourth quarter. Those five goals tied the game up, 9-9.
With 6:25 left in the game, Palmer’s second goal of the game broke the tie and, then, Lexi Liebowitz scored what would be the game-winning goal to give UCLA an 11-9 lead with 2:51 to go. Stanford scored again with 1:06 left, but they couldn’t get another one to force overtime and the Bruins won 11-10.
San José State Spartans
The Spartans are a team which has lost to every ranked team they’ve played. Their only win of the season came against Santa Clara. So, this weekend’s games should be easy wins for the Bruins. I expect UCLA to win today by double digits.
