UCLA Women's Water Polo Loses to Stanford, 12-11; Looks for Split Today
The Bruins never had the lead yesterday against the Cardinal.
The Bruins dropped the first game of their two-game weekend series against Stanford yesterday, 12-11. As a result, UCLA will look to pick up a series split this afternoon when the teams meet again at 1 pm PT. Today’s game will be live streamed on Pac-12.com.
Last Time Out
UCLA fell behind in the first minute of the game and they wouldn’t tie the game up until the second half. With 5:09 left in the first quarter, Stanford went up by two goals, but the Bruins finally got on the board when Annaliese Miller responded 22 seconds later. Unfortunately, Stanford added two more goals to take a 4-1 lead. Bella Baia cut the Cardinal’s lead back to two with 22 seconds left in the quarter and UCLA trailed, 4-2, after the first quarter.
Each team scored three times in the second. Stanford scored first to increase their lead back to three. Skylar Savar and Baia managed to cut that lead to just one, 5-4. The Cardinal went on to score twice in the final two-plus minutes of the half with Katrina Drake adding one in between for the Bruins. Stanford still held a two-goal lead at halftime, 7-5.
Stanford stretched their lead back to three with the first goal of the second half just 31 seconds in. UCLA’s third quarter goals all came consecutively. Brooke Maxson’s two goals sandwiched one from Hannah Palmer. Maxson’s second goal finally allowed the Bruins to tie the score, 8-8. Unfortunately, Stanford would add one more goal with 59 seconds left and the Bruins were trailing again, 9-8, at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter, UCLA tried to tie the game up again, but the best they could manage was matching Stanford’s three goals. That left the Bruins on the short end of this one, 12-11.
Today, UCLA will look for the weekend split when they face the Cardinal again.
