UCLA Women's Volleyball Visits Southern Cal Looking to Bounce Back from Loss to Utah

The Bruins were crushed by the Utes on Sunday and need a win over a bad Trojan team.

The UCLA women’s volleyball team travels across town tonight to face the Southern Cal Trojans at the Galen Center. Tonight’s match is scheduled for 8 pm PT and it will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks. The Bruins will be looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Utah on Sunday.

Last Time Out

After defeating Utah, 3-1, last Friday, the Bruins lost 3-1 to the Utes on Sunday.

The match started out well enough for UCLA. The Bruins scored the first six points of the match and eight of the first nine. But the Utes managed to claw their way back into the set, eventually trailing by just a point, 21-20. UCLA used a service error, an attack error and two Mac May kills to close out the set, 25-21.

In the second set, the Bruins were able to tie it at 3-3, but they never led in this entire set as the Utes cruised to a 25-18 win.

UCLA was actually able to lead early in the third set, but their last lead of the set evaporated when Utah tied the set at 5-5 and a 10-2 Ute run when it was tied 6-6 was enough to bury the Bruins in the third.

It only got worse in the fourth set as UCLA could only muster consecutive points once. Meanwhile, the Utes had two 4-0 runs and two 3-0 runs and they just absolutely crushed the Bruins in the fourth by a score of 25-10.

Utah’s Dani Drews led all players with 24 kills while Kenzie Korber added 17 more for the Utes. Mac May led the Bruins with 15 and was the only Bruin with more than seven kills.

Southern Cal Trojans

Well, the Trojans appear to be just what the doctor ordered after Sunday’s loss to Utah. Southern Cal is currently ninth in the conference standings with a 3-7 record.

So, hopefully, Michael Sealy has the team prepared to enter the Galen Center and walk out three sets later with a win. If UCLA can’t do that, it might be time for Martin Jarmond to start considering other people to lead this once-proud team.
