#18 UCLA Women's Volleyball Looks to Sweep the #10 Washington Huskies
UCLA beat the Huskies on Friday after earning a road split with the Washington State Cougars

It’s been a UCLA vs. Washington kind of weekend. First, the basketball team won their game to start it off. Then, the gymnastics team took to the floor in Seattle this afternoon. Once that meet is done, the location will shift from Seattle to Westwood when the #18 UCLA women’s volleyball team will look to complete their weekend sweep of the #10 Washington Huskies. Today’s match will begin at 3 pm PT and will immediately follow gymnastics on Pac-12 Networks.
Last Time Out
On Friday, it took the Bruins five sets to beat the Huskies, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 24-26, 15-11.
Washington scored the first point of the match but the Bruins bounced back by scoring three consecutive points. The teams battled for a bit and, soon, it was tied 8-8. That’s when the Bruins went on a 5-2 run which was followed almost immediately by a 5-0 run, which gave UCLA an 18-12. The Huskies tried to mount a comeback with a 4-0 run of their own, but it was too late and the Bruins took the first set, 25-20.
The second set proved to be a real battle. Neither team led by more than three points at any point. Washington had the edge early at 3-0 and again at 14-11, but, with the Huskies ahead 19-17, UCLA rattled off five straight to take a 22-19 lead. The teams alternated scoring the next four points to give the Bruins a 24-21 set point. But Washington fought off three straight set points as part of a 5-0 run to win the set, 26-24.
The Huskies maintained the momentum early in the third set by scoring 11 of the first 16 points to take an 11-5 lead. UCLA stormed back by taking seven of the next eight to tie the set, 12-12. Each team kept battling and, eventually, it was tied 18-18. Washington broke that tie to get a 19-18 edge before the Bruins went on a 6-1 run to force a set point, 24-20. The Huskies scored the next two points and it was starting to look like a repeat of the second set, but elan McCall got the set-clinching kill to put UCLA up 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Bruins trailed early and it took until Washington made an attack error with the score tied 11-11 before the Bruins would have their first lead of the set. Unfortunately, it was also their only lead of the set. Make no mistake, this was a close set. While UCLA did trail by as many as four points on multiple occasions including 23-19, they did come roaring back with a 5-1 run which included fighting off three set points to tie the set 24-24. Washington took the lead on the next volley and an attack error by Mac May allowed the Huskies to force a fifth set.
The fifth set wasn’t really ever in doubt after Emily Ryan broke a 1-1 tie. Washington closed the gap to just a point three times early, but May gave UCLA a 7-5 lead and that help lift the Bruins to the 15-11 win in the set and a 3-2 win in the match.
Today, the teams meet again in what will probably be another close match.
