The UCLA Bruins cruised past Southern Cal on Friday evening at the Galen Center, winning in four sets, 25-15, 14-25, 25-20, 25-17. Today, the teams meet again as the weekend series shifts to Westwood for the conclusion at 4:30 pm PT. Today’s match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.

Last Time Out

The teams split the first four points of the first set, but that was the last time the Trojans would tie this set. The Bruins scored the next point, breaking the tie, and the next three after that as they opened up a 6-2 lead. UCLA piled on from there and went on to win the first set, 25-15.

If there was a weak spot in this match for the Bruins, the second set was it. While the teams split the first ten points, UCLA’s only lead on an elan McCall kill with the set tied, 1-1. From there, it was almost all-Southern Cal. The Bruins were able to close the gap to just a point at 11-10, but they couldn’t tie and they wouldn’t get that close again as Southern Cal went on to win this set, 25-14.

UCLA took the lead quickly in set three. The Bruins scored the first two points and five of the first six. Soon, it was 12-5, UCLA, and it looked like they would run away with the set, but Southern Cal rallied to tie the set, 16-16. The Trojans, then, took a 17-16 lead, which proved to be short-lived. The Bruins tied it right back up on a Lexi Hadrych kill and they re-took the lead on a Southern Cal attack error. With it tied again at 19-19, Sabrina Smith put UCLA ahead for good as the Bruins closed the set with a 6-1 run, 25-20.

UCLA dominated the fourth and final set as well. A McCall ace gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead and, after Southern Cal tied it, 1-1, the Bruins scored four consecutive points and never looked back. Down 22-13, the Trojans tried to mount a late comeback, but their 5-1 run only managed to make it look like the Bruins didn’t dominate as much as they really did. The Bruins won this set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.

Mac May and Iman Ndiaye led UCLA with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, while Kate Lane and Audrey Pak led the team with 22 and 21 assists, respectively.

The teams meet again today at 4:30 pm PT. After they played across town on Friday, today’s match shifts to Westwood and Pauley Pavilion.
