The Bruins beat the Wildcats on Friday in four sets for their third straight win.
This afternoon, the UCLA women’s volleyball team hosts the Arizona Wildcats as the teams conclude their two-match weekend series. The start time for today’s match is 12 Noon PT and the match will be live streamed on Pac-12.com.
Last Time Out
On Friday, the Bruins won their third match in a row when they beat the Wildcats, 24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 27-25.
The first set was really the tale of three mini-sets. Arizona started off the set winning the first three points as a part of a larger 7-2 run by the Wildcats. At that point, it looked like Arizona was going to run away with the set, but an Arizona attack error and consecutive kills by Allison Jacobs proved to be the start of a 9-2 run by the Bruins, which put UCLA up 11-9. While Arizona took three of the next five points, the Bruins soon began another run. This time, it was a 7-2 run which put UCLA ahead 20-14. The problem was that the Bruins couldn’t close out the Cats. Instead, Arizona was able to close the gap to 23-21. Iman Ndiaye gave UCLA set point with a kill and, while they should have been able to get that last kill, Arizona managed to put together four kills together with a Mac May attack to win the set, 26-24.
The second set started in the Bruins favor. Ndiaye killed the first point of the set for the Bruins, but Arizona scored the next point before UCLA went on a 5-1 run. After the Wildcats scored two points, the Bruins went on another run. This time, it was a 6-1 run which put UCLA ahead, 12-5. When Arizona broke the run, they went on a 6-1 run over their own to close the gap to 13-11. The Bruins took another commanding lead when they went on a 10-3 run which expanded their lead to 23-14. While the Wildcats tried to come back again with a 4-1 run, they were only able to fight off two set points in this one and UCLA took the set 25-18.
After the break, the Bruins started strong by scoring the first three points. The Wildcats cut the lead to 5-4. A 5-2 UCLA run stretched the Bruin lead back to four points, 10-6, but Arizona responded, soon tied it, 12-12, and then took a 15-12. UCLA came right back to tie it, 15-15. Eventually, the Bruins took a 19-18 lead. The set stayed close and it was tied again at 22-22. That’s when elan McCall killed the next two points to give UCLA set point. An Arizona attack error gave the Bruins the win 25-22.
The fourth set was another back and forth battle. The Bruins scored 12 of the first 17 points while the Wildcats stormed back with a 7-0 run to tie it up. It would be tied six more times with neither team leading by more than three points and soon it was tied 23-23. At that point, the Bruins got another kill from McCall to make it their first match point, but Arizona tied it again. After UCLA’s second match point, the Wildcats tied it again, 25-25. But, after a Mac May kill gave the Bruins their third match point, an Arizona attack error wrapped up the set and the match for the Bruins, 27-25 and 3-1.
This afternoon, the Bruins will look to complete another weekend sweep when the teams meet again.
