#18 UCLA Women's Volleyball Looks to Bounce Back After Consecutive Losses
The Bruins will look to split this weekend's series against the Cougars after they lost their second straight match on Thursday.
This morning, the UCLA women’s volleyball team is in Pullman, Washington to play the Washington State Cougars in Match Two of this weekend’s series. Today’s match begins at 11 am PT.
Last Time Out
After splitting last weekend’s series against Oregon, the Bruins lost their second consecutive match when they lost to the Cougars, 25-15, 16-25, 28-26, 15-25, 9-15, on Thursday.
The match started out alright for the Bruins. They won the first set pretty easily. With the set tied, 5-5, Mac May broke the tie with a kill. An WSU attack error and a kill from Kalyah Williams followed, giving UCLA an 8-5 lead. Following consecutive points by the Cougars, the Bruins rattled off a 5-0 run to take a commanding 13-7 lead. Then, with a 19-14 lead, they used another 5-0 run to create their first set point. A Washington State block forced a second set point, but an attack error gave the set to the Bruins.
The second set also turned with the score 5-5. This time, it went the other way as the Cougars went on a 5-1 run, taking a 10-6 lead. The closest UCLA could get from that point was a two-point deficit at 13-11 and again at 14-12. Washington State won 11 of the final 15 points to take this set, 25-16.
The third set prove to be the closest set of the match. Neither side led by more than two points through the first 40 points. With UCLA ahead 20-19, the Cougars went on a 5-0 run to force their first set point. But the Bruins battled back and fought off four set points to tie the set back up. Washington State took the advantage by scoring next, but the Bruins fought off their fifth set point to tie it back up at 25-25. The Cougars then took the next volley to force a sixth set point and the Bruins fought it off with a kill from Allison Jacobs. Mac May and Emily Ryan then recorded consecutive kills to win the set, 28-26.
UCLA was unable to muster much offense at all in the fourth set. The Cougars opened the set winning the first two points and, while the Bruins would score two of the next three, they wouldn’t be able to muster more than two consecutive points in the rest of the set and lost it, 25-15, to force a fifth and final set.
That trend continued in the final set. Washington State began with a 4-0 run. With UCLA still unable to score more than two consecutive points, the Cougars ran away with the set and won it, 15-9, to win the match.
This morning, the Bruins will look for the weekend split.
