Last Time Out
The first set was a close one as neither team ever led by more than four points. It was a back-and-forth set. The Utes started by winning three of the first four points, but the Bruins quickly responded with a 4-1 run to take a 6-5 lead. The teams alternated the next eight points and UCLA still had the lead 10-9. Utah went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead, 14-10, but the Bruins came back with a 6-2 run to tie the set again at 16-16. The set was still tied ten points later, 21-21. UCLA was able to score four of the next five points and they took the set, 25-22.
Utah took the early lead in set two as well. The Utes scored three of the first four points and they still led at 5-3, but a 4-1 Bruin run put UCLA up 7-6. The Bruins still led at 11-9, but an 8-0 Utah run put the Utes ahead for good in this set and they went on to win the set, 25-20.
After the break, the teams opened the third set by splitting the first six points. A 5-1 UCLA run put the Bruins ahead 8-4. While the Utes were able to close the gap to just a point at 17-16, Utah was not able to tie the set again and UCLA went on to win this one, 25-22, to take two sets to one lead.
It looked like Utah was going to run away with the fourth set to force a fifth set. The Utes led 7-3 after ten points and they still led after 19 points, 12-7. They continued to dominate the set by winning five of the next seven points as they took a 17-9 lead. Then, the Bruins began their comeback as UCLA went on a 10-1 run to take their first lead of the set. It didn’t last very long. The Utes killed the next volley to tie the set back up, but a pair of kills from Emily Ryan and Allison Jacobs put the Bruins ahead again, 21-19. A pair of Utah kills sandwiching an attack error by Jacobs allowed Utah to re-take the lead, 22-21. UCLA got a kill from Ryan and a kill from elan McCall to go with a Ute attack error to give the Bruins match point, 24-22. McCall killed the next volley to finish the set and the match, 25-22 and 3-1.
Mac May led both teams with 19 kills while McCall had 17. Kate Lane led UCLA with 31 assists and Audrey Pak added 20.
