UCLA Women's Volleyball Beats Arizona State; Looks for Weekend Sweep Today

The Bruins defeated the Sun Devils, 3-1, on Friday.

This afternoon, the UCLA women’s volleyball team will look to sweep their weekend series against the Arizona State Sun Devils. The match will begin at Noon PT and will stream on Pac-12.com.

Last Time Out

On Friday, the Bruins defeated ASU, 25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22. The first set was a back and forth battle. The teams split the first 16 points. At that point, UCLA went on a 4-1 run to take a 12-9 lead, but ASU responded with a 4-1 run of their own to tie it, 13-13. With the set tied 16-16, the Bruins went on a 6-2 run which proved to be enough to go on and win the set, 25-22.

The second set began with a 4-0 Bruin run and UCLA held the lead until ASU finally tied it back up at 14-14. The teams split the next four points before the Bruins went on a decisive 8-0 run that gave UCLA a 24-16 lead. The Sun Devils finally broke the run with a kill by Iman Isanovic, but it was too little, too late as Sabrina Smith killed the next volley and the Bruins took the set, 25-17.

In the third set, UCLA didn’t have a lead until 14-13 and their final lead of the set came at 19-18. That’s when Arizona State went on a 4-0 run that the Bruins couldn’t overcome.

The fourth set began with the Sun Devils scoring two of the first three points, but a 5-1 run put the Bruins ahead for good. ASU was able to cut the lead back to just a point just once, at 4-3, as UCLA ran away with the set and the match, 25-22 and 3-1.

Mac May lead both teams with 19 kills while elan McCall and Allison Jacobs added 12 and 10, respectively.

Today, the teams conclude the two-match weekend series as the Bruins look to break out their brooms.
