The Bruins swept Georgia Tech on Sunday to advance to today's match.
After the UCLA women’s tennis team cruised past Georgia Tech on Sunday, they will play Pepperdine this afternoon in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Action begins at 2:30 pm PT and the match will be televised on the Tennis Channel.
Last Time Out
On Sunday, the Bruins swept the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 4-0. UCLA got on the board first by taking the doubles point. Annette Goulak and Vivian Wolff defeated Gia Cohen and Ava Hrastar, 6-1, on court two first to give the Bruins the edge. Abi Altick and Elysia Bolton secured the doubles point by defeating Monika Dedaj and Carol Lee, 6-3, on court three. That win halted play on court one where Abbey Forbes and Jada Hart were leading Victoria Flores and Kenya Jones, 5-3.
With the doubles portion of the match complete, play shifted to singles. Goulak earned UCLA’s second point of the match by beating Mahak Jain, 6-0, 6-1, on court six. Forbes picked up the Bruins’ third point of the match on court one with a win over Jones, 6-3, 6-1. With UCLA now needing just one more win to take the match, Bolton beat Cohen on court three, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Bruins.
That ended play on the remaining three courts. On court four, Wolff was leading Hrastar, 7-6 (8-6), 3-2. On court two, Hart lost the first set to Flores,6-3, but Hart took the second set, 6-2, and was leading in set three, 2-1, when play was stopped. Court five was the only court where the Bruins were trailing. That’s where Vanessa Ong lost the first set and was trailing in the second to Lee, 2-6, 3-4.
Pepperdine Waves
The Bruins and the Waves are familiar foes. The teams met three times during the regular season. While Pepperdine only lost three times during the year, two of those three losses came against UCLA.
The Waves got to today’s match by beating Northern Arizona and Stanford in the first two rounds and, then, by sweeping Michigan, 4-0, on Sunday.
Of the three times the teams met, the only time the Waves were able to beat the Bruins was when they met in Malibu. The Bruins took the meeting in Westwood as well as the neutral court meeting at the ITA Indoor Championships.
So, UCLA looks to have a slight edge in the today’s match.
