2 Seed UCLA Water Polo Starts Play in MPSF Tourney
The Bruins will look to beat defending national champion Stanford for the third time this season.
The UCLA Bruins are hosting this year’s MPSF Men’s Water Polo Tournament. The Bruins finished the regular season with a 5-5 conference record. While they finished tied with Stanford in the standings, the Bruins earned the 2 seed in the tournament by having beaten the Cardinal in their two meetings during the regular season.
Yesterday, three-seed Stanford cruised past Penn State Behrend to advance to today’s game while four-seed Southern Cal crushed Austin College, 21-5. The Cardinal will face the Bruins while the Trojans will take on the UC Berkeley Golden Bears whose 7-3 conference record earned them the top seed.
Of course, that means that the “real” water polo season starts today. The bottom line is that the Bruins need to win today’s game to advance to the championship tomorrow. The Bruins are looking for their third straight win over the defending national champions. Hopefully, UCLA can use their home pool advantage to help them overcome the disadvantage they face in trying to beat a team for the third time in a season.
Last Time Out
The UCLA men’s water polo team has been on a break since the weekend of February 20-21. That weekend, they face each of the remaining teams at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Complex. On Saturday, they beat the Cardinal for the second time this season, 11-10. Then, on Sunday, they were edged by UC Berkeley, 16-15, in overtime before losing to the Trojans, 9-4.
