#2 UCLA Softball Visits Long Beach State for Twinbill
The Bruins will head down the 405 to face the 49ers in a midweek doubleheader this afternoon.
Fresh off a four-game sweep of Utah, the #2 UCLA softball team will visit Long Beach State today when the teams will play a doubleheader. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 1 pm PT and the second game is slated to begin at 3:30 pm PT. On Sunday, the Bruins topped Utah, 6-1.
Last Time Out
With one out in the top of the second, Maya Brady hit her ninth home run of the season to put the Bruins ahead.
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth. Thessa Malau'ulu laid down a bunt and beat the throw for a one-out single. After she stole second, Kelli Godin singled and Malau'ulu advanced to third. For the second time in the inning, a Bruin picked up a bunt single. This time, it was Kinsley Washington. It brought Malau'ulu in as UCLA took a 2-0 lead.
The Bruins tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Aaliyah Jordan walked to lead off the inning. Delanie Wisz singled with one out and Maya Brady also drew a walk to load the bases. Jenavee Peres pinch-hit for Malau'ulu and she hit a two-run single which scored Grace Guzman, who had pinch-run for Jordan, and Wisz. A single by Seneca Curo re-loaded the bases with still just one out. Julie Rodriguez pinch-hit for Godin and also hit a two-run single, giving UCLA a 6-0 lead after six and a half.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rachel Garcia, who came in to pitch in the fifth in relief of Megan Faraimo, gave up a solo home run to lead off the inning. While Garcia also gave up a two-out single, she was able to get the next batter to ground out to short and the final score was 6-1, UCLA.
Long Beach State 49ers
Like UCLA, Long Beach State is riding a six-game winning streak. While the 49ers have had a good season with a 26-6 record, the six losses do not compare to UCLA’s three losses. The Bruins’ three losses came against Oregon and Washington. Both teams were in the top 5 at the time UCLA lost games to them.
By comparison, LBSU has lost games to San Diego, Cal Baptist, UC Davis and Cal Poly. As a result, I expect the Bruins to overwhelm Long Beach State with both their pitching and hitting. Look for UCLA to sweep today’s doubleheader.
