UCLA Softball Tops Huskies, 6-1; Plays Two Today
After beating the #3 Huskies last night, the Bruins go for the series win this afternoon when the teams play a doubleheader.
The UCLA softball team took the series opener against Washington last night by a score of 6-1. Today, the teams meet again for a Saturday doubleheader with both games airing on Pac-12 Networks. First pitch for game one is set for 4 pm PT while game two is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm PT.
Last Time Out
With Rachel Garcia in the circle, you know that the opposing team isn’t going to score many runs and she was in the circle last night for the Bruins.
So, when Briana Perez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the third to put UCLA up, 3-0, you had a feeling that that shot was the ballgame. And it was.
To be sure, the Huskies managed to score an unearned run in the fourth on a throwing error by Anna Vines, but that was all Washington could muster last night. In fact, two of the Huskies’ three hits came during the fourth.
The Bruins got that run back in the bottom of the inning after Garcia led off with a leadoff walk and Seneca Curo pinch-ran for Garcia. Delanie Wisz followed with a double and Grace Guzman pinch-ran for her. After Maya Brady flew out to left, Alyssa Garcia hit a sacrifice fly which scored Curo and moved Guzman up to third, but the Bruins couldn’t get Guzman in. Jenavee Peres pinch-hit for Vines and struck out to end the inning.
They did, however, manage to score a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Aaliyah Jordan homered to lead off the inning and Rachel Garcia followed with a double. She then scored on an RBI single by Alyssa Garcia, giving UCLA a 6-1 lead heading into the final inning.
In the seventh, Garcia gave up a lead-off walk. A double down the left field line gave Washington runners on second and third with still no outs. But Garcia wrapped up the game with three consecutive out to win her eighth game of the season.
All told, she finished the game throwing a 7-inning complete game and she allowed just three hits and a walk while giving up just the one unearned run and striking out six.
This afternoon, the Bruins and the Huskies will play a doubleheader as UCLA looks to win the series with a sweep today. Both games will air on Pac-12 Networks National and Los Angeles.
