#1 UCLA Softball Plays Two vs. LMU After Sweeping Cal State Fullerton
The Bruins swept their doubleheader yesterday against the Titans, 6-2 and 10-4.
Today, the #1 UCLA softball team returns home to Easton Stadium to face the Loyola Marymount Lions in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 11 am PT.
Last Time Out
Yesterday, the Bruins played a doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton. It was a bit of a rough start for UCLA in the first game yesterday. In the top of the first, starting pitcher Rachel Garcia left the game in the top of the first after she appeared to have gotten hurt running out an infield single. She never actually threw a pitch in the game. Garcia’s injury resulted in Megan Faraimo being called upon to pitch and she gave up two solo homers in the bottom of the first inning. After that, it was all UCLA going forward.
In the third inning, the Bruins tied the game with a pair of RBI doubles from Aaliyah Jordan and Julie Rodriguez. In the fourth, Julie Godin scored on a sacrifice fly by Bubba Nickles, which would prove to be the game-winning RBI.
The Bruins went on to add an insurance runs in each of the final three innings to give UCLA a 6-2 win.
Things started better for the Bruins in the second game. Nickles led off for UCLA and promptly tripled to right center. Jordan earned a one-out walk to give the Bruins runners on the corners. With two outs, Kinsley Washington hit an RBI double to left that scored both Nickles and Washington to give UCLA a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Anna Vines increased the Bruins’ lead to 3-0 with a solo shot to right, but the Titans scored four runs off starter Holly Azevedo in the bottom half of the inning.
Cal State Fullerton kept a 4-3 lead until the top of the seventh. Following walks to Jordan and Delanie Wisz and pinch-running for both, Taylor Edwards hit a double down the right field line that scored both runners to give UCLA a 5-4 lead. The Bruins went on to add five insurance runs which was capped by a three-run homer by Brianna Perez as UCLA took a 10-4 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Faraimo, who had relieved Azevedo in the fifth, shut the door with a three up and three down inning.
Loyola Marymount Lions
Loyola Marymount is 3-3 so far this season. They began 2021 with a win over Cal Poly and a pair of wins over Fresno State. Since then, they dropped one to Oregon State and a doubleheader to Cal State Fullerton.
Overall, today’s games should be easy pickings for the Bruins as UCLA is in an entirely different league than LMU, and I’m not talking about the Pac-12. Look for another sweep today.
