UCLA Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Looks for Series Sweep of Sun Devils Today
The Bruins took both ends of yesterday's twinbill, 6-1 and 4-0.
The UCLA softball team swept yesterday’s doubleheader over Arizona State, 6-1 and 4-0, to increase their winning streak to 12 games. The Bruins will look for their 13th straight this afternoon when they wrap up their series against the Sun Devils at 2:00 pm PT. Today’s game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
Last Time Out
Megan Faraimo took to the circle for the Bruins in the first game yesterday. She had a little bit of a rough go out of the gate. She walked the Sun Devils’ lead off batter Kindra Hackbarth. After a passed ball advanced her to second, she scored when her twin sister Maddi doubled to give ASU a 1-0 lead.
Maya Brady tied the game when she homered to left in the bottom of the second.
UCLA broke the game open in the third. Kelli Godin led off the inning with a bunt single and Bubba Nickles put the Bruins ahead for good with a two-run homer. Aaliyah Jordan doubled down the right field line and Alana Snow came in to pinch run for Jordan. Rachel Garcia hit one up the middle which scored Snow, giving the Bruins a 4-1 edge after three innings.
The Bruins picked up an insurance run in the fourth when Kinsley Washington homered to right center and they added one more in the sixth when Delanie Wisz led off the inning with a solo shot to left center.
Meanwhile, Faraimo kept the Sun Devils off the board after the first inning. She pitched a complete game and allowed just the one run on three hits and one walk while striking out ten.
In the second game, Holly Azevedo got the start for the Bruins. After pitching a 1-2-3 first inning, she got into some trouble in the second.
Alynah Torres led of the second for the Sun Devils and reached on a fielding error by Briana Perez. Makenna Harper singled to give ASU runners on first and second with no outs. Yanirra Acuna hit into a fielder’s choice advancing Torres to third. After Azevedo walked Bella Loomis to load the bases, Kelly Inouye-Perez made a pitching change, bringing Rachel Garcia in to put out the fire.
Garcia struck out the next two batters to end the Arizona State threat and keep them off the board.
Meanwhile, the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Perez came to the plate with two outs and she doubled down the right field line. She scored when Jordan singled to left, giving the Bruins a 1-0.
While that would have been enough for another Bruin victory with Garcia in the circle, UCLA added some insurance runs in the sixth. The rally began when Brady homered to left. Catcher Alyssa Garcia then doubled to right and Snow pinch-ran for her. Washington laid down a perfect bunt towards third that got Snow to third. Jenavee Peres pinch hit for Godin and walked on four pitches. Malau'ulu pinch-ran for Peres with runners on the corners and still just one out. Bubba Nickles scored Snow on a sacrifice fly which gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead. Perez kept the rally going by drawing a walk and moving Malau'ulu to second and setting the stage for Aaliyah Jordan. An RBI single to center scored Malau'ulu and UCLA took a 4-0 lead.
And, Garcia wrapped up the sweep with a scoreless ninth.
