#2 UCLA Softball Hosts San Jose State After Rout of Cal State Fullerton
The Bruins ended Wednesday's game against the Titans early due to the mercy rule, and will look to continue their success against San Jose State today.
The #2 UCLA softball team will host the San Jose State Spartans this afternoon after yesterday’s game against Long Beach State was cancelled due to COVID-related protocols within the LBSU program. On Wednesday, the Bruins crushed Cal State Fullerton, 9-1. First pitch for this afternoon’s game is slated for 12 Noon PT and the game will be live streamed.
Last Time Out
The Bruins took down the Cal State Fullerton Titans Wednesday afternoon, 9-1, in five innings due to the mercy rule.
Junior pitcher Holly Azevedo struck out four and allowed just three hits while giving up only one run over five innings.
In the top of the first, Fullerton was able to get on the board with their only run of the game, but UCLA answered with four in the bottom half of the inning. Bubba Nickles started the Bruin rally with a single and, after Briana Perez was walked, Aaliyah Jordan hit an RBI single up the middle to score Nickles. Perez was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice by Delanie Wisz. With two on and one out, Maya Brady doubled to left center and score Jordan. Alyssa Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Kinsley Washington followed with a two-run double to make it 4-1, UCLA.
Fullerton was never able to score again, but the Bruins added one more in the second. Perez led off the inning with a walk and then stole second. Anna Vines hit a two-out RBI single to score Perez and, after two, UCLA now led to 5-1.
The Bruins scored again in the fourth inning. Lauryn Carter pinch ran for Jordan after she led off with a single. Carter moved to second on an error and advanced to third on an infield ground out by Wisz. A sacrifice fly by Brady drove Carter in and the Bruins took a 6-1 lead.
UCLA tacked on three more in the fifth. After Washington singled to start the inning, Kelli Godin doubled to give the Bruins runners on second and third with still no outs. After Nickles’ grounder to second scored Washington, Perez doubled to drive in Godin and gave the Bruins an 8-1 lead. Malau'ulu and Wisz walked to load the bases. Brady’s grounder to second was booted. That scored Perez, putting UCLA up 9-1 and ending the game.
San Jose State Spartans
It’s been a rough start to the season for the Spartans. So far, they’ve lost three games to Stanford, two to Cal State Fullerton and once each to St. Mary’s and Loyola Marymount. Meanwhile, they’ve managed to beat St. Mary’s twice and LMU once.
So, frankly, today’s game will likely be another mercy rule win for the Bruins.
