UCLA Opens Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship Against Washington
The Bruins will be playing for the Pac-12 title on their home sand.
The Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships began at 8 am this morning with Oregon taking on Utah. This year’s event is being held at UCLA’s Mapes Beach in Westwood. The host Bruins will play their first match this morning at 9:45 am PT when they take on the Washington Huskies. Today’s match will be broadcast on all of the Pac-12 Networks in addition to being streamed on Pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app. UCLA is seeded second in the tournament while Southern Cal earned the top seed by beating the Bruins three times in the regular season.
Last Time Out
Last Thursday, UCLA hosted Southern Cal in the regular season finale. It was a tough match overall, but the Bruins fell to the Trojans again.
The first dual to finish was on Court Four where Joy Dennis and Delaynie Maple beat Cami Sanchez and Jacqueline Quade, 21-19, 21-18, to give Southern Cal a 1-0 lead. The Trojans quickly made it 2-0 when Hailey Harward and Megan Kraft defeated Lea Monkhouse and Devon Newberry, 21-19, 23-21. With the Bruins on the verge of losing the match, Megan Muret and Abby Van Winkle got past Paige Dreeuws and Haley Hallgren, 21-16, 10-21, 15-11, to keep UCLA alive. Over on Court One, Lexy Denaburg and Savvy Simo evened the match up, 2-2, by dispatching Julia Scoles and Sammy Slater, 21-19, 23-21.
That meant that the match came down to Court Five. In that dual, Southern Cal’s Audrey and Nicole Nourse won the first set, 21-19, but Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh bounced back to take set two, 16-21, to send it to a final set to determine the winner of the match. Ultimately, the Nourse sisters won the third set, 15-13, to beat Powers and Whitmarsh and also winning the match for Southern Cal.
Today, UCLA will face the Washington Huskies. The teams last met on April 11th at the Pac-12 North Invitational in Phoenix where UCLA swept the Huskies, 5-0. Since then, the Huskies beat Oregon twice and Portland once, but they ended the regular season on three-game losing streak.
The bottom line is that today’s match should be a tune-up as UCLA heads towards a likely meeting with Southern Cal for the Pac-12 title on Saturday. Look for another Bruin sweep today.
