#9 UCLA Men's Volleyball Loses to Concordia; Looks to Win Series
A loss to previously winless Concordia sees UCLA fall two spots in this week's poll.
After losing to Concordia on the road Saturday, the UCLA men’s volleyball team will look to take the rubber match of its three-match series with the Concordia Eagles tonight at 5 pm at Pauley Pavilion. While tonight’s match won’t be televised, it will be live streamed.
Last Time Out
On Saturday, the Bruins traveled to Concordia in Irvine to play the middle match of the three-match series. Somehow, UCLA managed to lose to the winless Eagles in five sets, 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 12-15.
Things started off right for the Bruins when UCLA scored the first point of the match. While the Eagles soon took a 3-2 lead, the Bruins responded with a 12-3 run. Concordia rallied and found a way to close the gap to just two points at 19-17; however, UCLA scored the next three points en route to a 25-21 set win.
CUI scored first in the second set, but the Bruins quickly responded by scoring eight of the next ten points. The Eagles began a 5-1 run of the own to cut UCLA’s lead to one at 9-8. They managed to keep it close and, in fact, they closed the lead to just one three more times — at 10-9, at 13-12 and at 14-13. The Bruins put together a 3-0 mini-run and they kept the Eagles from getting any close than two as UCLA went on to win the second set 25-20.
After the break, UCLA collapsed.
The Bruins scored the first point of the third set and that was their only lead of the set. In fact, the only tie of the set occurred when Concordia tied it 1-1. After the Eagles scored the next point, they were able to maintain their lead for the rest of the set as they went on to win, 25-20.
UCLA led for most of the fourth set. Though CUI kept it close, it looked like the Bruins would close the match out. They led by as many as six at 15-9, but Concordia played tough and whittled away at that lead. Soon, the Eagles had cut UCLA’s lead to just a point at 20-19. Two UCLA attack errors, along with two Bruin service errors, allowed CUI to take six of the next eight points and win the set 25-22 to force a fifth set.
UCLA jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead, but a 6-1 run by Concordia gave the Eagles the lead for good and a 4-1 run with the score 10-9 was the nail which sealed the win for CUI. Concordia went on to win the final set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.
Tonight, the Bruins will look for the series win in the rubber match.
