UCLA Men's Volleyball Tops GCU in Five Sets; Looks for Season Sweep Today
The Bruins will look for the series and season sweeps of the Antelopes when they meet again this afternoon.
Last night, the UCLA men’s volleyball team needed five sets to get past the Grand Canyon University Antelopes, 26-28, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-11. The Bruins will look for a weekend sweep when they face GCU again this afternoon at 2 pm PT. While the match won’t be televised, it will be live streamed.
Last Time Out
The Bruins led for most of the first set. In fact, for most of the time UCLA led, they were leading comfortably by four points and they still led by four at 18-14. Slowly, the Antelopes chipped away and soon the Bruins’ lead was down to a point, 20-19. A 4-0 run put GCU ahead 23-21, but UCLA battled back to tie it as the teams went back and forth. With it tied 26-26, GCU managed to score on consecutive points to win the set, 28-26.
The Antelopes took an early lead in set two, but the Bruins bounced back and soon led, 6-5. GCU retook the lead on a 6-1 run and the Bruins weren’t able to comeback from that until they tied it up, 21-21. Unfortunately, the Antelopes scored four of the final six points to win this set 25-23.
After the break, the Bruins scored the first three points of the third set. After GCU closed it to 4-3, UCLA, the Bruins ran away with the set. The Antelop es just couldn’t score on consecutive points until UCLA had staked a 23-10 lead. While GCU won four of the next five points, a service error from GCU gave the Bruins the set, 25-14.
In the fourth set, the Antelopes scored the first point on a Bruin service error, but UCLA scored ten of the next fifteen points to open up a 10-6 lead. Eventually, GCU managed to tie things up at 17-17. At that point, the Bruins went on a 5-0 run, taking a 22-17 lead that the Antelopes couldn’t come back from and UCLA went on to win the set, 25-23.
In the fifth and deciding set, GCU again jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but UCLA went on an 8-3 run and the Bruins cruised to win the set, 15-11, and the match, 3-2.
Today, UCLA will look for the weekend sweep when the teams meet again at 2 pm PT.
