#6 UCLA Men's Volleyball Faces Southern Cal at Home
The Bruins split last weekend's series with BYU
This evening, the UCLA men’s volleyball team returns to action when they host crosstown rival Southern Cal in the first of three consecutive matches against the Trojans. The match begins at 5 pm PT and, while not televised, it will be streamed on Pac-12.com.
Last Time Out
Last Saturday, UCLA was looking to sweep #1 BYU.
Unfortunately, the Cougars had other ideas as the Bruins were swept on Saturday, 16-25, 21-25, 17-25. The first set started off competitively as the teams split the first ten points, but with it tied 5-5, BYU went on a 5-1 run and UCLA could not recover and could only close the gap to two points twice.
The second set picked up where the first set left off. The Cougars scored the first two points of this set and never trailed in it, though the Bruins were able to catch up and tie it twice, first at 18-18 and then again at 19-19. But BYU scored six of the final eight points to win the set.
The third set looked like it was going to go the Bruins’ way after they opened with a 5-2 run. Unfortunately, UCLA was only able to score on consecutive points one more time in the set. With the Bruins ahead 8-5, the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to take the lead for good and they used a pair of 5-1 runs to take a 23-15 edge. The teams split the next four points and BYU finished the sweep of the match to deny the Bruins a series sweep.
Southern Cal Trojans
Today’s match is the season opener for Southern Cal after the Trojans’ first three matches of the season were postponed due to a case of COVID-19 in their program. Southern Cal is not ranked in the AVCA Top Ten at this point.
The Bruins were able to win the only meeting between the teams last season in four sets. Look for the Bruins to win today as well.
