I definitely think the refs had something to do with the win. If I rewatch game tape I bet I can point out at least 100 yards that the refs gave them on top of the extra downs in between the missed holds and phantom calls. Even on the last drive that ended in a game winning Fg, there was a very blatant hold, and a catch that should’ve been reviewed.
But still I def think ucla should have been able to hold onto a 14 point lead and the TOs definitely didn’t help. Our already porous defense was done no favors by the muffed KO or the interceptions.
They were lousy but the Bruin defense was worse and because of that, Pitt deserved to win the game. This team wasn't a 10-win team anyway, they simply were not coached well enough to be a 10-win team no matter how many seniors they had. Next year they will be lucky to win 4 or 5 games even though they have the three easy non-league schedule again. My guess is that UCLA Football 2023 will set new low attendance records at the Rose Bowl, even with some pretty good recruits coming in, Kelly will still be there which should drive away most of the fanbase.
I received negative comments a couple of weeks ago regarding my prediction about this bowl game. Turns out I was right on. I love the heart and commitment of our football team. These guys show up everyday and work hard. Not so much for the head coach. Speaking of coaches: UCLA basketball coach Cronin doing his thing at 8 pm PST tonight. Game time. GO BRUINS!!
The loss of this game is not on Chip--it is on the unfortunate interceptions and fumbles. That being said, the defense sucks and that is on Chip for trying to build a program from the transfer portal. Our defensive line was totally dominated--sure Pitt had holding but that is a weak excuse to blame the loss on the refs.
I am not a football expert but UCLA’s defense is not very good, hasn’t been very good all year long. When it mattered they were not able to hold off anyone. This game should have been over by halftime; however, UCLA let Pitt hang around and they won. Referees were terrible both ways, but it’s UCLA’s fault it got to that point for not doing what they had to do.
While that's definitely true, you can't outweigh failures to recruit top local high school players with Ivy League and Group of Five transfers. If they were really going to be coached up, I think we'd have seen that by now.
I disagree. UCLA football can and should be successful without the 5 stars that go in droves to the SEC and other elite programs. We need volume of 4 star talent which we absolutely can and should eat up from the portal. We shouldn’t be just focusing on the lesser conferences for our transfers either. We should be trying to raid the SEC and the Big Ten of their transfers as well. I’d much rather have a 4 star talent with a year or two experience under his belt than a 4 star high school recruit that might flop.
I agree with you completely, if we can get the four star transfers. That does outweigh most high school recruits. And yes, we shouldn't be just focusing on the lesser conferences. I think that was my point, though. We have had quite a few transfers from those programs, and not so many from the SEC or Big Ten.
When you are a school like UCLA or any other non-elite program, your recruiting classes will generally be dominated by 3 star and low level 4 star guys who are not going to see much time if any as 1st years and probably not really make an impact until their third yet. So a recruiting class is not going to turn anything around. If you want instant improvement, you do what USC did and focus on the transfer portal. You can get better players who are more proven and ready to start immediately.
I agree to an extent - but I still believe it needs to be "AND" not "OR", especially in such a talent-rich area where we live. We're one of two schools in the overall metro area of the highest level HS football league in America, not to mention the rest of Southern California, and we should be doing better/more to recruit from that talent base at the very least along with/AND hitting the portal successfully just as you suggest.
I don't think that's 2018 thinking - the talent where we live is one of the biggest advantages we have over so many schools if we can be better at tapping into it.
We were up 14 in the 3rd quarter against an unranked and depleted team and had the game in our control.
We were 8-1 this season and had the P12 and a possible CFP appearance in our control.
Wasted opportunities. A 37-35 loss. 9-4 on the season.
Today was a microcosm of our season and sadly typical of our program. And this was our "best" season in almost a decade. What a shame.
Separately and sincerely, and more importantly in the big picture...Thank you to all our seniors and others who played their final game in blue and gold today. Always a Bruin.
Even if this game was an almost too perfect microcosm of the 5-year DTR-Chip-efense Experience, I hate that it ends this way for DTR who gave everything he had to our program - especially in the portal/4-schools-in-4-years era - and all those whose on field ride ended today. Not to even be able to be out there to try to influence the outcome or atone for your mistakes is the worst for any athlete.
Thank you indeed for all you've given seniors and other Bruins who played your final games today. No matter how frustrated we fans get in our passion for excellence, know you are appreciated.
DTR has regressed and ‘forcing’ passes. Hard to win a game when he throws 3 interceptions. McGoverns defense is adjusted for at halftime, and we’ve seen that more than once
Judging the plays, the first two I think he wasn’t helped by his receivers. Those were two catchable balls granted not accurate throws; however, the third one, was a “WTF moment,” he threw the ball right at the opponent’s numbers. Still at the point the sensation was that UCLA would get the ball back and score again. Then, the turnover of the KO and that’s when the game’s momentum turned against UCLA. I guess this is the way it always ends for us.
A couple of fans did not take my Kelly comments too well recently. I called a spade a spade. Much as we all would appreciate a bowl game win, the game to Kelly is expendable because warts and all, he already has met the threshold for keeping his job for now. Another loss or win would not have mattered either way. We saw it today. I watched the game in Hawaii. Today’s outcome made it clear we have not been writing him for no legitimate concerns. Without any change, UCLA is no match for many Big Ten teams.
You cannot grow peaches on a cherry tree. A retread coach can only do so much. Troy Aikman fell head over heels for him then. I believe he would agree with me today.
A loss is a loss. At the end of the day, the buck stops at the doorstep of the person in charge, Chip Kelly, a high priced retread coach. How others wanted to spin today’s outcome is their choice, their decision. UCLA cannot compete in a competitive Big Ten conference with a coach having only so much to give.
I recall how fans strenuously defended a floundering Karl Dorell, a clueless Rick Neuheisel, a rudderless Jim Mora - all subpar, uninspiring coaches never should have been hired and ultimately sacked by UCLA as it finally saw the light. As Wisconsin, Nebraska pulled the trigger and brought in new coaches for the upcoming challenges, UCLA will dither, hesitate until the last moment to do what is long overdue, put Kelly on that list I mentioned.
Chip Kelly exhibits a similar brand of coaching as Mora and Neuheisel. I put Dorell dead last on that list of average to mediocre coaches. Mora and Neuheisel eventually wore out their welcome in Westwood. Kelly will soon reach that stage. Someone told me AD Jarmond was with the basketball team in NYC when they vanquished Maryland, then Kentucky as Cronin put on a clinic in Calipari’s face. People later approached Jarmond and spilled their concerns abut Kelly with him. Word is Jarmond is indeed watching Kelly closely. So there you have it. I am not commenting anything with nothing to back it up. Finally my friend, I am not chief of any kind but a loyal alum. Somebody once mocked me about my donation. We contribute what we can. Collectively it is no chump change. Bottom line, the passable performance of Kelly is not the right fit for UCLA.
I am one of those people who criticized you and I still stand by my statement. We have our first five star since the Mora era. We have continued to progress in terms of wins and we have one of the most explosive offenses in the country. If we were to fire Chip I’m sure Saban would have no problem taking him as his OC.
I still agree that defense is a problem and needs and infusion of talent and a different scheme. I appreciate McGovern’s improvement but we could use a new defensive coordinator. I love DTR and his competitive spirit and all he’s done for the program, but I think we will have an upgrade at QB next year when Schlee or Dante get the start.
Lastly if CFB has become a spending game then maybe the fingers should be pointed at the clueless regents and UC admin who continue to disregard the impact of athletics — or at least football, which they seem to detest but don’t realize pays the bills. If they had any clue about the impact of having quality football programs on the rest of their campuses athletic departments, the Pac-12 wouldn’t be on the ropes and Cal wouldn’t be begging for a subsidy from their little brother.
The first half of your comments - five star recruits, defense upgrade and new quarterback etc - made sense to me if only Kelly is not coaching. Your facts are reminiscent of the self fulfilling optimism, false enthusiasm and anticipation of yesteryears when Guerrero sat on the fence, dithered while the rest of us argued the fate of Mora, Neuheisel and most infamous of all, Karl Dorell. Whatever he has done, Kelly may have earned your support and faith. But I honestly have seen enough. Another year, a few more blue chipped recruits and what not would be the same with this retread coach with only so much to give. Troy Aikman would concur. As for your second part, UC Regents still run their show based on yesteryear’s NCAA mantra of student athlete when most other major programs are already in full gear with athlete students. That says it all. Lastly, your criticism is fine with me because we, as alum or fan, are entitled to our opinion, for right or wrong. Only when mocking or sarcasm permeated in the disagreement, which is what some people did, would I deem it inappropriate and offensive.
Let’s be real. Student athlete was always a misnomer for UCLA football and basketball. And I’m fine with it. They certainly have the option of being students, but the best players are here to play. The only difference now is they get paid.
Agree with most of what you said except at QB. DTR was PHENOMENAL most of the year, even if he shat the bed in the Sun Bowl. If it’s Moore, there’s going to be growing pains. If it’s Schlee, he’s just not as good as DTR, not close. I think we will still have a great offense next year — lots of talent on that side of the ball. Hopefully Chip hits the portal hard on D.
Obviously, I have no idea how things will shake out but I wouldn't be surprised if a similar usage scenario between Schlee & Moore plays out to how Chip deployed Wilson Speight (experienced transfer from Michigan) and DTR (1st year freshman) in 2018 with Garbers - who *should* be basking in having led a bowl-winning drive - as a possible factor as well... It would be awesome if we can get Carson Steele to transfer in from Ball State (he reportedly visited last weekend) to pair with Harden in the backfield to really keep the run game rolling especially with a QB transition.
I heard through the grapevine before the season that Chip needed to hit 10 wins to keep his seat. I guess that Moore is his reprieve. So,
I want to know right now what the minimum performance expectation is for the 2023 season for Chip to join our entry into the B1G. No Ducks or Huskies slated, but more challenging travel:
..just a note to say I elsewhere commented on the "powder puff" openers for next year's sched and was advised that the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers was no pick up squad like those that appeared on USC's and UCLA's WWII schedules. These guys are the real deal Division I and only have been playing FB since 2003.
The Chipster might be in for a little surprise..
..but then, isn't he always?
P.S. - I call him "AT&T" because he always seems to phone it in.
4-8 (Assuming UCLA gets out of commitments with Hawaii and Fresno St and this strawman schedule holds as Big Ten contemplates getting rid of divisions)
This sounds like you flipped a coin. You don’t even know what roster we will have or who will start at QB. you might as well do this for 2024 too. About the same amount of info.
I'll be happy to indulge a "back of the envelope" set of predictions after the February recruiting period and the portal settles out... but until we actually *know* who is on our team - and who is actually on those who we play - it's a bit early to do a "game-by-game", no? Remember, at this date last year, most of us thought Dillon Gabriel would be our starting QB and Caleb Williams was still at Oklahoma...
I agree, just having fun with it, but the predictions are based almost completely on having Kelly as coach. When you have a coach like this, it doesn't really matter who is on the team, in my opinion.
Not surprised by the results. It all started at the beginning of the game. DTR in your face attitude riled Pitt players. What’s worse, Pitt ‘s second string QB started, they were without half their starting players on offense & defense, yet they still beat up the powder puff bruins. Is this the “Kelly culture” he has created?
Then you have DTR out of control, while being interviewed by the games commentators, was asked if he was aware of the pro scouts in the stands? Still the defense couldn’t make the stops when they needed, to little to late.
What is noticeable about our Bruin team, when the opponent becomes physically more aggressive, Kelly’s Bruins can’t match up. Another potential win gone. Go Bruins.
Probably not, it was his last game & I’m sure he wanted to make an impression for the draft. Sometimes it’s better to stay focused in the present than worry about the future.
Fitting end to a season that abruptly deteriorated after the AZ loss. Hope the 2023 season is better, but I won't be surprised if the frustrating level of mediocrity and inconsistency under Chip Kelly just repeats itself. Happy New Year, Bruins!
Haha U Can Lose Again yall suck DTR is a punk classless ni....!! Stop crying yall will never b gd in football. Well yall can look forward to volleyball, gymnastics and tidally winks. Oh ya basketball but chicks play hoops😭😜 haven't been to a rose bowl since 1990's lost to On Wisconsin back to back and haven't won since '84. Sad that none of yall will never ever see a N.C. Now stop your sh.. Taking you will always b USC 's lil bro i mean Bit.. No matter how sc does in a season!!
Kingsbury just got fired by Arizona - wonder if Riley might "pull a Vermeil" and go straight to the NFL to coach his old QB Kyler Murray??? Wouldn't put it past him...
Of course Vermeil actually won a New Year's Day bowl before he left...
I definitely think the refs had something to do with the win. We lost because of turnovers. Period.
It’s really hard to be a ucla football fan.
Pain oh the pain to the pain !

You really underestimate the importance of the portal. Wake up. It’s not 2018.

2020 vs Just $C... 2021 vs Fresno... 2022 vs Pitt - hopefully this particular tragic trilogy comes to an end now.
Good thing there was a strong wind in EL Paso today to blow the stink of that second half away!
But it sure was a day for second string QBs.
We were up 14 in the 3rd quarter against an unranked and depleted team and had the game in our control.

I'll be happy to indulge a "back of the envelope" set of predictions after the February recruiting period and the portal settles out... but until we actually *know* who is on our team - and who is actually on those who we play - it's a bit early to do a "game-by-game", no? It actually does matter considering Chip has put forward both 3 and 9 win teams with vastly different rosters.
Might as well do a game by game for 2025 too
Pitt is not a good team, yet they out talented and out performed our Bruins.
This shouldn't happen.
Congratulations to them.
They did not put talent us. We beat ourselves with turnovers. FIVE
He replied, to paraphrase, he was going to show them something special. He sure did. It was the same DTR from five yrs ago. I thought to myself, this means it’s another game about DTR. I believe when he took himself out of the game he was psychologically defeated.
Still the defense couldn’t make the stops when they needed, to little to late.
What is noticeable about our Bruin team, when the opponent becomes physically more aggressive, Kelly’s Bruins can’t match up. Another potential win gone. Go Bruins.
Thankfully we still have basketball.
Maybe DTR would have been better off sitting out this game...

At least get your dates right, lil einstein.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha - No Cotton Bowl win and no tip when you deliver my pizza, son.
Wonder how much NIL money the salon will pay out to sport the "BOWL LOSER" polish job...
Now back into the packet, Trojan.
Only good once...
U$C Condoms got ripped... LoL!
Tulane
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Flail On!
Kingsbury just got fired by Arizona - wonder if Riley might "pull a Vermeil" and go straight to the NFL to coach his old QB Kyler Murray??? Wouldn't put it past him...
Of course Vermeil actually won a New Year's Day bowl before he left...
I've been rooting against Kingsbury since he got to AZ and immediately replaced Josh Rosen with Kyler Murray. Karma, Kliff.
Tbh USC hasn’t really done anything in football since like 2004. Almost 20 years. Just another program.
Your mom
So much for talking smack before witnessing an epic choke job today against Tulane. FU$C, Fart On!
I'm a UCLA Bruins fan and a Dallas Cowboys fan. Bother teams are unfortunately, very similar.
