I am exhausted with watching our lack of preparation and it falls on Chip, who isn't worth one more $ - and yet here we are once again in a season where coaching is non-existent.
Chip's raking in millions and enjoying the good life while our Football program sinks lower and lower into the proverbial quick sand. Lack of recruiting, lack of coaching, lack of leadership and lack of responsibility.
I have said this before but it may bear repeating... With all of the additional money UCLA is going to receive in the BIG, we need to just fire Chip as soon as Jarmond has a solid short list of new coaches in hand and under the radar. The amount of ticket revenue loss will be huge unless we make a change. And we will be demolished in the BIG with Chip.
Jarmond has an opportunity to make his mark and it's time for him to step up and call for Chip's dismissal.
Joe, you are giving them too much credit in your article title. It was 27-10, not 27-17. I'm surprised they scored even 10. That had to be one of the worse offensive performances I've ever seen of a major college football program. Make no mistake, Arizona has a good defense, but they aren't that good. No, this was poor coaching, period. As have all the UCLA losses, well... since Chip Kelly arrived. UCLA does not have a "quality win" this season. Every team they have defeated this year is lousy or Div II/III quality. The first three games were jokes, probably the Chipster making sure they pad their schedule with three easy teams so he could become bowl eligible. Next week they face a 1-5 (2-7) ASU team at home, look for them to win this game because again the quality of team is very low and they are at home, but then again with that offense, who knows. The SUC game should actually be a good one, SUC has no defense and UCLA has no offense, but SUC can score points in buckets. My guess would be SUC 31 UCLA 7, I'm guessing the 7 would be a defensive TD and of course UCLA will probably miss like 5 FG attempts, instead of Kelly going for it on 4th down. Wonder why he didn't start going for it on 4th down earlier last night when everyone who was watching could see he doesn't have a kicker? My guess is that the Chipster has as much confidence in his offense as we all do... NONE. The last game of another abysmal UCLA football season will be Cal at home, and anything can happen in this game. If the offense keeps up their "stellar" play, I'd say Cal in an upset. But again, Cal is 1-5 (3-6 overall), yet another "quality opponent" at home. So, in summary, UCLA has played three "average" teams this year, all away games and they have lost them all.
Going forward, no way would I be surprised if the Bruins lose their last 3 games. We have better talent than ASU and Cal. However I am afraid Chip will find a way of screwing things up.
It's been proven that Chip Alford can be outcoached by teams having lesser talent on the field, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Bruins lose the next 4 games (their toilet bowl game included). Sadly, the game against U$C will determine who's the best of the worst in SoCal, as both teams have dropped out of the Top-25 rankings (probably for good).
Can't add a whole lot to what's already been said here. Our offense has been the emperor's new clothes all season; Chip's recruiting deficiency shows big time at virtually every position and in particular with the O-Line. Another mediocre year and only thanks to some pretty poor competition. Bring on those Sun Devils!
Grider... I really enjoyed your conversation with War Planner in that prior post about Roberts and Donahue, bringing to light your great memories of UCLA Football. You are both such wonderful writers! And 'the Emperor's new clothes' is classically legend and a perfect analogy.
In other news, the Bruins Basketball team takes the court tomorrow night! And that will be something to cheer about, with a real Coach and a team with loads of raw talent that I believe will be shaped into greatness.
Unfortunately, neither Mara or Buyuktuncel have been cleared to play by the NCAA. I would think Mara, who is the crown jewel of the recruiting class, is the most problematic since his professional Spanish club claims he is still under contract with them and making lots of noise about it. Do not know why Buyuktuncel has not cleared?
That is the legendary Ducky Drake helping him. Ducky, who was the brother of my high school principal and helped me immensely with some rehab my senior year, was a great guy! Drake Stadium is appropriately named!
Well, your contributions are certainly appreciated by this Bruin! And thank you for the great photo. Although I didn't know Ducky, from all you have said and from what I have heard from others, he seems to be part if the same fabric as our beloved Coach Wooden 💙💛
The image of that corpulent frame parading all over the sidelines bare nekkid has put me off the cold anchovy pizza I was saving for dinner. It is only marginally more over his old grey T-shirt he ears all the time. Dy you 'spose we can get Jarmond to confiscate it when he gives "The Wood Chipper" the old heave ho? Might be nice to burn it at halftime of the first home game of the new coach's stint.
Remember the bonfires during suc week. Perhaps we can rekindle those flames. Darn, when we fall so far as to ruin cheese topped with anchovies, we are near rock bottom! Your description of chipster is so spot on, I'm gonna have nightmares of that image 🤣
Chip's disdain towards recruiting and his obvious "could care less" attitude about winning translates to being a second tier football team. Building from the Portal is important to fill in lack of depth or a hole in the roster but not a substitute for recruiting. We are currently 57th in Rival's 2024 recruiting rankings. The top 25 teams in the rankings are , for the most part, the top 25 teams in the polls. As many studies have proven: "We showed a significant relationship between recruiting classes and winning in college football when controlling for the average time of possession, average yards per game, and redzone efficiency."
Time to separate from Chip and bring in somebody who will recruit and will be passionate about winning. Chip's boat has sunk.
Thank you for the great write up. I give our defense a pass with our first year defensive coordinator. Up to this game the Bruin defense has performed above expectations. Chip Kelly's offensive "scheme" during his tenure at UCLA can be compared to my plumber.....I never know when anyone is going to show up. Predictably unpredictable; the offensive unit consistently suffering from a Jekyll/Hyde identity disorder of not knowing who they are. Coupled with unprepared vanilla play calling which just goes through the motions. Wash, rinse, repeat. An offensive unit coached by Kelly sets the team and fans up for failure. To coin a phrase, Chip has a way of lowering the river rather than raising the bridge. It gets to the point where this team is unwatchable. Frightening to think how this current team coached by Kelly will be able to compete in the Big 10 Conference.
My harshly critical comments regarding Kelly began around the fall of 2021. I have had enough of him by then. Many of my contemporaries felt the same way. Whenever we donated - for any amount big or small - we always made sure it included our concerns. Then we met some UCLA athletic personnel in person at NYC when we attended a bruin basketball game at Madison Square Garden. I thought they understood our concern and the need for a change. For us and all of you folks, without a change, every season would be same old song from this retread coach UCLA tragically was conned into hiring in the first place. Yes, that is indeed the case, unquestionable from all angles.
Where are some of his ardent defenders, apologists now ? They mocked, mercilessly ridiculed and taunted me. Naturally I responded but I kept my dignity without lowering myself to their level. Let the fact speaks for itself. I thought for sure this time, when the season is over, a much needed change is forthcoming. Then came the ill dreaded extension, to the delight of the Kelly apologists but we vomited because we knew. It is nothing but a sorry reprieve, a reflection of indecision, dithering reminiscent of the ugly, inept Guerrero era.
Absolutely, the legacy of Guerrero lives on. Mediocrity is tolerated to the utmost except and unless catastrophe is imminent. Neuheisel was let go finally when the bruins were practically slaughtered in Arizona, frustrations erupted into full scale fights on the field among players before Guerrero reluctantly, begrudgingly sacked the coach. The Alford saga ended the same way.
I can already tell you about the SC game. They may be struggling a little in their way but when they march onto the field, seeing the bruins nervously awaiting at the other end, all their killer instincts will come unglued, unhinged until our team sprawls either dead, or mortally wounded amidst the smouldering ruins.
I skipped the last few games. I had better things to do on Saturdays than to watch Kelly and our team wallow in mediocrity. As many of you now demanding out loud for change, our foray into Big Ten's frosty, hostile landscape will certainly be sad and unwatchable.
This speaks volumes, H, an actual "paying customer" foregoing attendance? Your description of the upcoming BIG GAME is spot on, with the post game interviews being The Chipster mewling something about the 48-21 loss and eructing such bromides as, "well, we were in it until we had those two INTS late in the first quarter."
I gotta go get a beer -- and it's 9:15 on a Sunday morning. Hope the Pastor won't mind. I'll sip it discretely in one of the last few rows in back.
Just bring in a bottle of tequila, who cares ?!? In the name of despair, the guy on the cross would understand. He was human before he sacrificed himself, wasn't it ?!?
I say from now on, every time The Chipster blows a game out of his fanny, we demote Troy Aikman one spot on the UCLA QB ranking list. This time two seasons from now, Troy will be down below Larry Zeno!
Me again. Well, Troy couldn't beat SuC, and I like Mark Harmon, but I'd switch him with Dennis Dummit for the way Dummit slaughtered SuC in the 70 game. And John Sciarra was one of the best running QB's I've ever seen!
Yeah, don't disagree. There are so-o-o many fond memories. I was at the Toe Jam game where Aikman blew it out his barracks bag when Rodney Peete made the flu-ridden comeback.
There was some two minutes or so to go and Aikman had it in the 20. My two kids and I were sitting at the Mausoleum staring at the clock and the the 4 downs on the scoreboard and my older son asked me if the Bruins would win. I told him that they had the perfect opportunity for a heroic comeback in a big game and then..
..kablooey!
Aikman went on to be big time for the Cowboys but never impressed me. You see, it's what the guys do in the blue and white/gold uniforms that matter. As to Harmon, I came back off of active duty in the USAF after being stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha and I was up to my ears with GOBI GRED this and HUSKERS that and what Harmon and Efren Herrera did to them that September night and that was Mark's FIRST GAME was positively orgiastic!.
I was too young to remember Efran Herrera in his collegiate years, but when I was 9-10, I was a fan of his time in Seattle with Jim Zorn and the fake field goals.
I turned the game off after the second blown FG. How can a coach who engineered the acquisition of THREE decent quarterbacks fail to prepare an offense to so continuously. I can see one of the kids (the frosh) throwing INTs -- but all three and two of them so frequently?
The D is on the new coach and he's done magnificent job. Mr Smith is correct. They would have to have played a perfect game to keep UCLA in this.
THIS LOSS WAS WRITTEN ON THE FREAKING WALL!
Hello? Saturday night n the desert in Tucson with a rabid fan base and an unranked team thirsting for an upset against a hated rival? Did Chipster tell all the "O" guys to go catch some rays during this week's practice? If The Chipster cannot prepare his team against 'Zona, he's going to suck a lot of swamp water next year in the B.O.
I killed a chicken and plowed through the entrails and it does not look good from here on out. We get a "revenge win" against the Devils of the Sun, get handed a "makeup loss" from the Toe Jams, and eke out a win against the CALBAREZ yielding a below-par 8-4 record and a trip to the Terlet Bowel in Alviso, California on the Friday after Thanksgiving versus American River Community College -- for a loss.
The extension was on the promise of "next year's recruits!" (Moore). A familiar, losing argument. Soon we'll hear, "Chipster can't pass/catch/run the ball for them!"
Chip earning overlapping income from his multi-failed prior tenures is obscene.
Leap frogged in his 6th year by Washington (a bona fide national program), Jedd the Fisch, and OSU in fewer years by their respective coaches' rebuilding.
I really like the resign idea, but Chip has rarely been one to do the right thing. I can't imagine Jarmond is not keenly aware of the increasing discontent (mild term I know). If Chip can't do the right thing, Jarmond needs to step forward.
Yes, I know. Chip won't resign nor will he be tarmacked. Just 3 more games--a win against SUC will not save him--and we will see what the future Jarmond football legacy will be.
If UCLA wins all 4 games (including USC and a bowl game) they will keep him. No way they jettison a 10-3 coach, no matter how bad he is and he is bad. But I'm optimistic they will not win all 4.
SC fired their DC Alex Grinch. Firing underperforming coordinators was not something I was aware a head coach can do… that must be why Chip stuck with Azzinaro for so long right??
Welp... suc's Riley just fired DC Grinch, likely to save his own job. Remember how loooooong it took us to get a real DC in Lynn... And Chip would have been met on some tarmac moons ago. I disdain suc but you gotta hand it to them - they act when things go south in Football.
The other one is Notre Dame. They will fire one after another in rapid succession just to get the right one on a winning note. Remember the series of abrupt coaching change after Lou Holtz's retirement until they finally got Frank Kelley. If Lincoln Riley does falter, which is doubtful, USC would do the same. Only UCLA remains constipated in that regard.
There is zero logic to the way UCLA has handled or mishandled our Football program for years. If buyout money was always the excuse then that excuse is now gone with the BIG money around the corner.
UCLA Football is the antithesis of the unmatched excellence that UCLA has always embraced. It is the unexplained and most frustrating anomaly.
Thank goodness for Daylight Saving Time this weekend--it gave back 1 hour of the time wasted watching the Bruins lose again. They finally played a "complete" game this season, as the defense has joined the offense and special teams in looking totally awful, with all of the credit going to their inept, lifeless, humpty-dumpty resemblance of a head coach. After becoming toilet bowl-eligible, the team is regressing and becoming even worse than mediocre. The losses keep piling up against lesser programs that are clearly moving in the right direction. If anyone has a plane they can fly over Westwood, i have a large banner they can attach to it that reads: "FIRE CHIP ALFORD ALREADY!!!"
This is eerily reminiscent of the Alford saga. He may be the late Bobby Knight's pet player but as coach, he could not do a darn thing well. Kelly is on the same par as Alford was.
It sickens me, beyond words, to know so much $$$ remains at stake even if we wanted to wriggle ourselves off the wicked hook we ignorantly placed ourselves into back then. We may temporarily stop donating if and when UCLA comes calling as I anticipated they would. Next season apparently is nothing to look forward to. There is always the season after next. Meanwhile, we will be at Pauley watching up close our new basketball team tomorrow evening. Let's see what Cronin has to offer this season.
💯The money thrown at Chip is truly mind boggling. Jarmond has a chance to do the right thing, not the easy thing. We shall see.
The bright spot amidst the darkness is UCLA Basketball. This Basketball team has me entirely intrigued as I believe their potential for greatness is unlimited if Cronin can blend and develop their individual skills within his defensive system. I have faith that he will and it could be a season to remember. 💙💛
I’ve seen better high school offenses. The passing game is horrendous. Chip is a fraud! SOS
I don’t blame the defense. They would have had to play a perfect game.
Great write up - thank you!
I am exhausted with watching our lack of preparation and it falls on Chip, who isn't worth one more $ - and yet here we are once again in a season where coaching is non-existent.

Get rid of Chip Kelly. 6 years in and the program is still fricking mediocre. Jarmond needs to wake up.

Yeah. He hasn't done anything of significance since leaving Oregon. Coaching a loss in the 2022 Sun Bowl against a depleted Pitt team was clown shit.

$UC just fired Grinch; really hoped they would wait until we played them...
Hope they don't lure D'Anton Lynn over to fill their vacancy!
I didn't think of that... would not surprise me even a little.
SC fired their DC Alex Grinch. Firing underperforming coordinators was not something I was aware a head coach can do… that must be why Chip stuck with Azzinaro for so long right??
I should have checked the comments... you best me to the punch 🤣
Welp... suc's Riley just fired DC Grinch, likely to save his own job.
When does Chip’s buyout get reduced? Can’t wait!
It decreases from $8 million in December 2023 to $4 million in December 2024.
The question I have is does the buyout stay at $8 million until December 2024 or does it gradually decrease over that year...
CMC always offers a quality product. Totally invested in his players and the school.
Yes, a far cry from Chip. I can't wait for the game tonight!
The devil is definitely in the legal details there!
From what I have read the buyout is reduced to $4 million on Dec. 15, 2023.
