UCLA Gymnastics Opens 2022 Season With Tri-Meet vs. Minnesota and Iowa
This year's team kicks off its season with a trip to Minneapolis.
The 2022 UCLA Gymnastics schedule begins this morning with a tri-meet against the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Iowa Hawkeyes at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis.
The Bruins were ranked 8th in the Road to Nationals preseason poll while the Golden Gophers were ranked 9th. Both squads kick off their season today and, since neither team has competed during the first two weeks of the season, they are not currently ranked. On the other hand, the Hawkeyes have competed the past two weekends and are currently ranked 9th.
Let’s look at this year’s Bruins squad.
Who’s Gone
This year’s team has lost Nia Dennis, Savannah Kooyman, Nicole Shapiro, and Lilia Waller. Each of those team members from last season completed their NCAA eligibility.
Who’s Back
Other than those four, the rest of the members from last year’s team all return.
As far as the coaching staff goes, the coaching staff also remains in tact with one exception. Volunteer assistant coach Kyla Ross has left Westwood and joined the Arkansas Razorbacks coaching staff under Jordyn Wieber. She joins former Bruin Felicia Hano who is also on Wieber’s staff as an assistant coach.
Who’s New
There are six new freshmen this year’s roster. Of course, the biggest name joining the Bruins this year is US Olympian Jordan Chiles. She is joined by fellow freshmen 2020 US Olympic alternate Emma Malabuyo and 2020 US Olympic trials competitor Emily Lee. Mia Erdoes, Alexis Jeffrey, and Ana Padurariu are the other new team members.
