#13 UCLA Gymnastics Comes Home to Host Oregon State
After a narrow loss to Utah, the Bruins return home to Pauley Pavilion.
After losing to Utah last Friday, the UCLA gymnastics team returns home to host the Oregon State Beavers today at 11 am PT. Today’s meet will air on Pac-12 Networks.
Last Time Out
For the first time this season, the UCLA Bruins gymnastics team scored over 49.000 on all four events, totaling 197.100 overall. It was a season best for the Bruins, but not quite enough to beat the Utes, who scored a 197.225.
Opening the meet on bars, Chae Campbell started the event with a 9.775 while Kalyany Steele and Margzetta Frazier earned a pair of 9.750s. Sara Ulias scored a 9.875 and Frida Esparza kept the momentum going with a 9.800. Nia Dennis took the event title with a 9.900, giving the Bruins a solid 49.100. Meanwhile, the Utes were on vault and totaled a 49.300.
Moving to vault, UCLA only had five athletes in the event, meaning all scores were counted. The Bruins pulled through, with Pauline Tratz and Kendal Poston each earning a 9.825. Frazier followed with a 9.875 and Dennis with a 9.800. Campbell closed the event with a 9.850, bringing the Bruins to a 98.275 at the halfway mark. Utah was still out in front with a 98.525.
Emma Andres started the floor exercise off with a 9.825, an Sekai Wright continued her solid floor season with a 9.875. Tratz added a 9.900 and Frazier was once again amazing with a 9.850. Campbell’s 9.950 earned her another event title, and Dennis anchored with a 9.725. After three, UCLA had closed the gap to just a tenth of a point, 147.675 to 147.775.
UCLA continued to shine on beam. Poston is now in the leadoff spot and she definitely started the Bruins off on the right foot with a 9.875. Samantha Satki was once again solid with a 9.900 while Frazier scored an event winning 9.925. Nicki Shapiro notched a 9.725 and Esparza scored a 9.875. Campbell added a 9.850 to her all-around total, earning a career-tying high of 39.425 and the all-around title. In the end, the Utes just edged the Bruins, 197.100 to 197.225.
Oregon State Beavers
Today, UCLA hosts Oregon State Beavers, who scored a season-best score of 196.200 last week but fell to #13 UC Berkeley. They just edged the Bears on floor, 49.300-49.250, with Kaitlyn Yanish taking the floor title. Madi Dagen and Kristina Peterson each score a 9.925 on beam, sharing the event title with Berkeley.
Overall, the Beavers’ best event is the vault, with an average score of 49.075, good enough for 13th in the nation. Yanish is ranked fourth in the country on floor and first in the Pac-12 with an average of 9.920.
While the Beavers have lost three meets this season, they have steadily increased their scores each week and are looking to break 197.000. UCLA is going to have to continue the momentum from last week to ensure the win today.
